Notes
American jazz guitarist John Leslie "Wes" Montgomery, born March 6, 1923, is widely considered one of the major jazz guitarists, emerging after such seminal figures as Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian and influencing countless others, including George Benson, Kenny Burrell, Bobby Broom, Royce Campbell, Grant Green, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Howe, Russell Malone, Pat Martino, Pat Metheny, Lee Ritenour, Joe Diorio, Tuck Andress, David Becker, Randy Napoleon, and Emily Remler, among many others. Montgomery was born in Indianapolis, Indiana; according to NPR Jazz Profiles "The Life and Music Of Wes Montgomery, " the nickname "Wes" was a child's abbreviation of his middle name, Leslie. He came from a musical family; his brothers, Monk (double bass and electric bass) and Buddy (vibraphone and piano), were jazz performers too. The brothers released a number of albums together as The Montgomery Brothers. Although he was not skilled at reading music, Wes could learn complex melodies and riffs by ear. He started teaching himself the six string guitar at the relatively late age of 20 by listening to and learning the recordings of his idol, swing/pre-bop guitarist Charlie Christian; however, he had played a four string tenor guitar since age twelve. He was known for his ability to play Christian's solos note for note and was hired by Lionel Hampton for this ability. Following the early work of Christian and gypsy-jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, Wes joined Tal Farlow, Johnny Smith, Jimmy Raney, and Barney Kessell to put the guitar on the map as a bebop / post-bop instrument. While these men generally curtailed their own output in the 1960s, Montgomery recorded prolifically during this period, lending guitar to the same tunes that contemporaries like John Coltrane and Miles Davis were recording. This 4 CD collection features Wes Montgomery's complete recorded output from 1958 1962 and includes 3 classic albums with Wes as leader, a further 4 with his brothers, released as The Montgomery Brothers, and the classic collaboration Wes (along with Cannonball Adderley) made with Jazz vocalist and lyricist Jon Hendricks on the album, A Good Git Together. This compilation contains possibly the finest music Wes Montgomery was ever to make during his short life - he died in 1968 of a heart attack at the age of 45 - and certainly remains a classic collection of some of the best jazz music ever recorded.

I waited to find the older, far superior 80675 in the original box. But when I received it, it had the cheap updated 80675R version, which is a piece of junk. But in fairness, everyone is doing this. They show a picture of the original 80675, then send you this one. Many adds even have a picture of both. Heck, even a new version of the original packaging (blue box) has a picture of Both the old 80675 and the new 80675R, on the same box! I'll probably end up throwing this one in the trash.
