Synopsis
Elizabeth Stone has life under control. She relishes her work as a professor of poetry and is contentedly single, she's overcome a potentially fatal illness, and she's chanced on the perfect subject for her next book. Even better, the research will take ber back to her old university in the 'city of books', where the one man she has always sought to impress still lives. What she fails to realise is how far the past will return to haunt her, or that she will start taking the wrong turnings all over again. This captivating and unusual love story portrays an exceptionally gifted woman whose childhood has left her with a passion for literature yet unable - or unwilling - to read emotions. Deeply felt and beautifully wrought, it celebrates the verse of poets from Wyatt to Eliot as it shows the power of words to wound and mislead, but sometimes to let us speak directly from the heart.      , Part of Penguin's beautiful hardback Clothbound Classics series, designed by the award-winning Coralie Bickford-Smith, these delectable and collectible editions are bound in high-quality colourful, tactile cloth with foil stamped into the design. George Eliot's most ambitious novel is a masterly evocation of diverse lives and changing fortunes in a provincial community. Peopling its landscape are Dorothea Brooke, a young idealist whose search for intellectual fulfillment leads her into a disastrous marriage to the pedantic scholar Casaubon; the charming but tactless Dr Lydgate, whose marriage to the spendthrift beauty Rosamund and pioneering medical methods threaten to undermine his career; and the religious hypocrite Bulstrode, hiding scandalous crimes from his past. As their stories interweave, George Eliot creates a richly nuanced and moving drama, hailed by Virginia Woolf as 'one of the few English novels written for adult people'.

  • Good price and okay quality

I got the item and it was a litttle damaged on the cover. I don't mind a book messed up on the back but the cover is very important to me. A small part of printing on the cover was come off. Didn't return it because I didn't want to wait another week to get the new one but given that it is stated new, I was disappointed. The price is unbeatable, though. So it's all good.
