Das Wörterbuch Deutsch als Fremdsprache richtet sich an alle, die Deutsch als Fremdsprache lernen und lehren. Nichtmuttersprachler haben andere Nachschlagebedürfnisse als Muttersprachler: das Wörterbuch Deutsch als Fremdsprache wurde speziell für die Bedürfnisse von Nichtmuttersprachlern erarbeitet. Die alltägliche Kommunikation kann mit etwa 15.000 bis 20.000 Wörtern bestritten werden, dementsprechend enthält das Wörterbuch Deutsch als Fremdsprache ca. 19.000 Stichwörter. Die Lernenden erhalten so Informationen über den Teil des Wortschatzes, den sie wirklich brauchen . Und dieser Wortschatz wird gründlich nach den neuesten sprachwissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen analysiert: Die "kleinen" Wörter, die eine so große Rolle bei der Beherrschung einer Fremdsprache spielen und die so schwer zu erlernen sind, bekommen großen Raum: Konjunktionen, Präpositionen, Modal- und Gradpartikel werden ausführlich berücksichtigt. Zu jedem Stichwort wird die korrekte Aussprache angegeben. Das Wörterbuch verdeutlicht die Systembeziehungen im Wortschatz. Dadurch kann der Benutzer beim Nachschlagen ständig seinen Wortschatz erweitern : Durch die Angabe der Synonyme und Antonyme wird der Benutzer vom einzelnen Stichwort zu verwandten lexikalischen Einheiten geführt. Jedes Stichwort wird - soweit möglich - einer Wortfamilie zugeordnet. Die Stichwörter werden ausführlich erläutert: viele Beispielsätze und Anwendungsbeispiele zeigen das Wort und die Wortbedeutungen in den Zusammenhängen , in denen sie verwendet werden. Bei den Worterklärungen werden nur die Wörter verwendet, die im Wörterbuch selbst vorkommen. Es wird erläutert, wie man verschiedene Wörter miteinander kombinieren kann. Die grammatischen Normen werden für jedes Stichwort angegeben. Jedes Stichwort, jede Bedeutung wird mit einem Stilmerkmal gekennzeichnet. Das Wörterbuch enthält zahlreiche idiomatische und kommunikative Gebrauchswendungen sowie Funktionsverbgefüge und erklärt sie. Merke -Kommentare zu den Wörterbuchartikeln weisen auf bestimmte Besonderheiten und Regeln hin. 500 Abbildungen veranschaulichen die Erklärungen. Ein grammatisches Tafelwerk im Anhang des Wörterbuchs führt die Benutzerinnen und Benutzer zu den Regeln. Über 80 Wortfelder zu den unterschiedlichsten Bereichen erweitern den Wortschatz.
