Besides, the Etruscans were vicious. We know it because their enemies and exterminators said so. Die einfuhrenden Worte bringen die Problematik der Beschaftigung mit der etruskischen Geschichte auf den Punkt und belegen die Relevanz der Beschaftigung mit der Thematik. Die fruhroemische Geschichte bis zur Eroberung durch die Kelten 387 v. Chr. ist dabei an die der Etrusker geknupft, was allein die geographische Nahe bedingte, denn die zu betrachtende sudetruskische Stadt Veji und Rom waren nur durch den Tiber und eine Entfernung von etwa 18 km getrennt. Fur eine Ausbreitung auf der italienischen Halbinsel schien fur Rom deshalb eine Konfrontation mit dem noerdlich von Rom gelegenen Etrurien und vor allem mit der Stadt Veji unausweichlich. Da in dem Zitat auf die Einseitigkeit der Informationen uber die Etrusker hingewiesen wurde, namlich hauptsachlich aus roemischer und griechischer Perspektive, ist gerade diese Seite der UEberlieferung kritisch zu betrachten. Deshalb soll in dieser Arbeit im Hinblick auf die Konfrontation zwischen Rom und Veji herausgefunden werden, ob diese einen wirklichen Existenzkampf zweier Grossmachte darstellte oder nur in der roemischen UEberlieferung zur Schaffung einer eigenen Identitat diente? Um diese Frage zu beantworten wurden verschiedene literarische Quellen und der archaologische Befund fur die Geschichte der Etrusker im allgemeinen und fur Veji im Speziellen genutzt, auch wenn die Ergiebigkeit dieses Materials auf den ersten Blick gering erscheint.
