My late 80's style German bike lights required a positive ground be used due to the center contact's connection to the bike frame. I tried several types and decided to use these exclusively for both front (was 2.4 Watt) and rear (was .5 Watt). The configuration of the light elements is close enough to work well in front but gives a "ring" pattern in the rear due to greater deviation from the focal length. The brute force of the high light output makes even this application very adequate.
