About this product

Product Information

ABOUT A BOY, directed by Chris and Paul Weitz, stars Hugh Grant as Will Freeman, a proudly self-absorbed 38-year-old Londoner. Living lavishly off the royalties from a hit Christmas song penned by his father, Will excels at nothing except doing nothing, which, in his case, includes shopping for CDs and having his hair "professionally disheveled." When Will makes a guilt-free exit from a brief fling with a single mom, he decides to crash a meeting of S.P.A.T. (Single Parents, Alone Together) in pursuit of more single mothers. This scheme leads to meeting Suzie (Victoria Smurfit) and Marcus (Nicholas Hoult), the socially awkward 12-year-old son of her flaky best friend, Fiona (Toni Collette). A series of odd situations leads to Will and Marcus becoming unlikely friends, and gradually both of their lives start to change for the better. However, when Will falls for the lovely Rachel (Rachel Weisz) and attempts to pass Marcus off as his son, things go awry. In order to win the heart of Rachel and make amends with Marcus, Will must finally grow up--and completely embarrass himself in front of hundreds of people.Reveling in its characters' quirks and flaws, ABOUT A BOY is a smart, funny, and fast-paced comedy, meticulously crafted by the Weitz brothers. Grant, in possibly the best performance of his career, wisely covers his patented charm with a shallow facade, and Hoult avoids being too cute or precocious; instead, the two actors develop believable characters that grudgingly warm up to each other. Collette is suitably bizarre as a depressed hippie mother, and Weisz provides excellent support in her relatively small role. However, it's clear from the title that this film is about the boys. And that includes Badly Drawn Boy (aka Damon Gough) who contributes an outstanding soundtrack that recalls Simon and Garfunkel's work on THE GRADUATE. Given Nick Hornby's excellent source material, ABOUT A BOY could have easily been an enjoyable movie, but in the hands of its talented collaborators, it's a truly exceptional tale.

  • About Both Boys

This is a wonderful story and even though it says it is about A boy it is about a friendship between two boys...so to speak. I love this film because I myself have flet like an island and it is a very selfish and sad existence. It is a grta way to show that by allowing yourself to care for others you can really begin to like yourself and open yourself to others a little more easily. The cast is great. I loved the boy Marcus in this film, he is cute and innocent like boys that age should be. Hugh Grant plays the self-centered Will to the hilt and the scene at the school Rock concert is great. Toni Colette is great as a Mom with depression and seeking support as a single parent. I think this is greta because you can hear the thoughts of the characters which help to sort of explain thier ...

  • Not Bad for an Offbeat Movie

I hate Hugh Grant--I think he is a self absorbed arrogant jerk and that his character, or lack of one, shows through in almost anything he plays. The boy was not a likable character, nor was his mother. But this film wasn't about whole people, and that's what made it work. You identify with the neediness of this odd little boy and respect his courage for latching on to the only lifeline that he can find in a world of people who don't like him. You see a bit of why the mom is such a suffocating and unbalanced person. You can even respect the self centered bachelor who becomes a refuge for a clingy little boy and pays a price for his growing concern for another human being. This was probably the role Hugh Grant was made for and, while I still think very little of him personally, this video ...

  • About a Boy--A movie with character(s)

I laughed and cried throughout the movie. The writing was excellent as well as the character development. My husband sat across from me, watching the same movie, and looked at me with wonderment. He could not understand my bursts of laughter nor my sorrowful tears This movie is about a man (played by Hugh Grant) who is selfish and self-centered and who has no self-worth. He seeks women only to use them for sex with never a deeper, more meaningful relationship in his mind for them. He believes he has discovered a virtual gold mine of untapped "prospects" when he decides to target, and pursue, single Moms for his selfish quest. Hugh goes to extremes and is quite pathetic as he takes certain steps to try and meet single Moms. I suppose my past, personal experiences as a ...

  • Great movie!

I really liked this movie, and I didn;t expect to like it. It;s not just a surface comedy, there;s a lot to it, and a lot about life, all the messy and great things that can happen, plus it;s very funny in parts. Hugh Grant is a loner/playboy that learns how important it is to really connect with other people on an honest level. The boy in the movie is great too, he is so awkward and so real. Anyway, I would recommend it.

  • A "girl" movie even your husband will watch

I am not a chick flick fan and so have avoided Hugh Grant's movies like the plague. However, this show is the exception. The show is filled with interesting people and situations and me and mine just laugh almost non-stop thru the whole thing. It ends good. I don't like sad endings. All the problems get solved and its just a happy movie. Good date movie. It won't bore your guy.
