Not as easy as a Garmin
The unit works fine, but when connecting to a computer to download, it takes some time. You also need to download software for the unit. My experience was less than easy when it came to get my GPS to talk to the pc. It was cheap. It does work. Nothing special. Screen is small, but can be used fairly easily. I'm pleased with it. But my Garmin is better.

Very good basic GPS
I bought the Magellan Maestro 3225 for a relative. Since she has gotten lost on more than one occasion, and frequently travels late at night, a GPS unit seemed like a must have for her. Having a limited budget of approx. $50, and not wanting to purchase a pre-owned unit, I chose a factory refurbished GPS with some of the features I felt were most important. The Magellan 3225 has text-to-speech with spoken street names. It does not have lane guidance, but does announce the direction of upcoming turns. Menus are user friendly, easy to enter text, program, and begin navigating without reading the manual. Speaker volume is good - alert chime can give you a heads-up when a direction will be spoken so you won't miss the instruction. Or, you could just tap the direction icon to have it ... You also have the ability to exclude a certain road from your programmed route. It acquires satellites quickly, and uses NAVTEQ mapping data - the same as Garmin. I did a side-by-side comparison with a Garmin Nuvi 360. The Magellan initially acquired satellites faster, both chose the same routing for my destination, both recalculated simultaneously and rerouted the same way. If finding points of interest is a priority, The Magellan 3225 only has 1.3 million POI's (garmin has over 6 million POI). That could be increased with a map upgrade. When I purchased this refurbished unit I knew it did not have the latest maps installed. I knew this unit would be mainly used in the NJ area where most roads have remained unchanged for years, especially major highways, so having maps over a year or more old wasn't a huge issue for me. I recently made two out-of-state trips using a GPS with maps over two years old and had no problem getting from point A to point B. Magellan has a 30 day policy to provide a free map upgrade if your unit is using an older version, BUT that does not apply to refurbished units bought at an auction site. Your only option would be to purchase an upgrade. As of now, the most current for this unit is the 2009 Spring Map Update for $79.99. Overall, I think this unit would be a good choice for the budget minded (assuming cost would be in the $50 range) wanting reliable navigation at an affordable price. If having the most up-to-date maps and millions of POI's is your preference, then I would choose another brand or model. Units with more features can likely be found for the same price or less than adding an $80 upgrade to this unit.

I was somewhat uncertain about buying a Magellan since I had not personally tried this brand before, but decided to purchase a manufacturer's refurb model and give it a try. I am certainly glad I bought the Magellan Maestro 3225. In a matter of minutes I was able to navigate through all the menus, set all the options, and start using it without even really needing to read the instructions. This unit works like a charm. It is easy to understand, and just as user friendly as the Garmins I'd used before. Seems to be right on track with directions and has never gotten me lost or detoured off route. A nice little feature I like is that you can set the unit to give you an 'alarm' sound (bell, chime or ding) when you ... My only previous experience with using GPS units were with Garmin products. The Maestro 3225 was a terrific value for the money I paid for it. Now I no longer have to worry about printing Google map directions and trying to read from a piece of paper while I'm driving :) The maps are the 2009 version, but I knew this when I bought it, and I realize I will have to upgrade at some point in the future (and any GPS unit eventually has to have map updates). According to Magellan's website, the latest map update for this model is the 2010 update, so I will probably wait until they offer a newer map update before I purchase.

GPS for my college age child.
I liked this unit due to that fact that it is simple to use, a good price, and not real large display. I bought it so my college age child could more easily get around the big city where she goes to college. The GPS wokrs well for our purposes and was relatively easy to use.

I have had a Magellan GPS for several years. I have found its reception and maps to be superior to other brands that I have seen other people use. My only complaint is that the touchscreen controls are far from obvious. No matter how much I use it; I still have to hunt for my memorized addresses or guess at how to zoom the map in/out or display the selected route. And I don't know how many times I have drained the battery because I didn't hold the power button long enough !I have had a Magellan GPS for several years.
