An essential read for students of Rome's Third Century Crisis
Little published work of high scholarship and length exists on the Roman Third Century Crisis, its beginnings and aftermath. Syvanne's biographies of the emperors Caracalla, Gallienus and Aurelian and Probus are welcome contributions. Regarding Gordian III and Philip, as in the author's other books, the research is exhaustive; however, the results put to paper may often overwhelm the uninitiated. Occasionally the writing is ponderous and lumpy; one more rewrite might have improved the text which occasionally suffers from tangled syntax and clumsy usages. Another proofreading might also have helped. The author often uses the words "educated guess," "to speculate," "it is possible that" or "in my opinion" in constructing historic scenarios which, with the deplorable state of the primary ... Large quotes from ancient authors like Herodian and the writers of the Augustan History have italicized inserts by the author meant to illuminate but they rather distract. The author might shorten these quotes by choosing the most piquant sentences--or he might put them in his own words. Some references (to Loriot, for instance) might be transferred to the notes; this might smooth out the narrative flow of the text. Long stretches of the narrative, however, are absorbing and lively. (The reader glimpses, for instance, what social, economic and political events led to Rome's decline--and to Medieval feudalism.) Considering the complexity of the materials, the orderly sequencing of events is commendable. Given that the book covers the 'barracks emperors,' its bent is predictably military with large expanses devoted to campaign details. Rome's enemies by this time abound and their sheer number, and names--the Quadi, Greuthungi, and Carpi are examples, might bewilder readers unfamiliar with the rise of barbarian Europe. The main participants, in any event, especially the short-reigning emperors Gordian I, Gordian II, Pupienus and Balbinus, come to life, as do, of course, Gordian III and Philip the Arab.
