    Little published work of high scholarship and length exists on the Roman Third Century Crisis, its beginnings and aftermath. Syvanne's biographies of the emperors Caracalla, Gallienus and Aurelian and Probus are welcome contributions. Regarding Gordian III and Philip, as in the author's other books, the research is exhaustive; however, the results put to paper may often overwhelm the uninitiated. Occasionally the writing is ponderous and lumpy; one more rewrite might have improved the text which occasionally suffers from tangled syntax and clumsy usages. Another proofreading might also have helped. The author often uses the words "educated guess," "to speculate," "it is possible that" or "in my opinion" in constructing historic scenarios which, with the deplorable state of the primary ...
