About this product

Product Information

Though THE READER may boast the typical pedigree of a Holocaust film--acclaimed actors, a literary source, and an Oscar-baiting end-of-the-year release date--this drama has a significant difference: it focuses on a perpetrator, rather than the victims. Kate Winslet takes on the hefty supporting role of Hanna Schmitz, a woman who has an affair with Michael Berg (German actor David Kross), a 15-year-old boy in 1950s Germany. They spend their brief romance alternately making love and focusing on literature, with Michael reading everything from Chekov to Homer to his lover. Soon, Hanna abruptly disappears, and Michael returns to his normal life. Almost a decade later, Michael is studying law, when he sees Hanna again; she is on trial for her crimes as an S.S. guard during the war. Michael is torn between a desire for justice and his knowledge of a secret that may save Hanna.THE READER makes full use of hindsight and historical perspective. Based on the bestselling novel by Bernhard Schlink, the story is framed by an older Michael (Ralph Fiennes) who deals with both his personal history and the collective past--and guilt--of the German people. This is a complex film that doesn't give the audience any easy answers; Hanna is undoubtedly guilty of horrific crimes, but she is a multilayered character who is always fascinating and always human, thanks to the terrific performance of Winslet, who plays Hanna over four decades. Director Stephen Daldry earned an Oscar nomination for his work on another literary adaptation, THE HOURS, and he deserves more praise for this polished film.

  • READING BETWEEN THE LINES

Features Actors:Kate Winslet,David Kross as a teen, and Ralph Fiennes as the adult Running Time:123 Min. Rating:R Kate Winslet stars as Hanna, the bedraggled West German workingclass accidental seductress of painfully horny high school boy Michael (David Kross as a teen, and Ralph Fiennes as the adult) coming of age in a comfortable but rigid late 1950's bourgeois household. One day while Michael is heading home from school, he falls ill and throws up in front of Hanna's seedy apartment building. And when she comes to his aid and invites him upstairs to clean himself up, Michael is hopelessly smitten while watching the cranky loner as she irons her bra, a chore that females apparently used to fuss about prior to the women's liberation movement. Though Hanna is no wilting flower. As soon ...

  • Extremely Disturbing Pensively Positioned To Affect!

I'll have to hand it to the film-makers and producers, the screenplay writer, the director, & the actors. This novel, written by Bernhard Schlink, truly comes alive on film at the end of 2008 to win Kate Winslet an Oscar for Best Lead Actress. This film, directed by Stephen Daldry (The Hours 2002), was brought to the screen because of the genius of screenplay writer David Hare, who also worked with Daldry before in Plenty (1985). To take such a complex story such as The Reader and bring it to life was the greatest challenge since it is told in first person through the life-long experiences of a young German adolescent Michael Berg (David growing into manhood within the newest generation of their country's war torn atrocities. Many cues had to be in place in order to portray the ...

  • Not only do words have meaning, they do get in the way!

This is an adaptation of a novel by the same name. I expected from the cast and direction, that this would be an emotional film. I did not expect the level's of excellence that I saw. The plot directions are fairly predictable - until they are definitely not! If you are prone to getting very involved with your film appreciation and are very vocal in your demonstrations - watch this film alone first... When you come out the other side of this emotional minefield you see human love and passion -first displayed as innocent and as cosmically intended as possible, then - Well watch the film. All I can say is: If Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus ever collaborated on a film script, and they wanted to really define romantic futility - they might have come up with something equally as gripping and ...

  • Very good movie!

The movie was done very well. Kate Winslet and the young man really captivated me. Especially when he finds out she was a guard in Auswitch. You can feel the actors characters very much. Kate won an Oscar for this role.
