Based on the novel by Michael Noonan, DECEMBER BOYS is a touching coming-of-age drama set in Australia in the 1960s. Maps (Daniel Radcliffe), Misty (Lee Cormie), Sparks (Christian Byers), and Spit (James Fraser) are four best friends who live in a Catholic orphanage, hoping to be adopted but learning that dreams don't come true--and adults often let kids down. Because they were all born in December, they are the first group of boys who get to travel to a small cove and stay with an older couple, Bandy (Jack Thompson) and Skipper (Kris McQuade), two of the orphanage's benefactors who have offered to house the kids during the Christmas season. Once off on this rare vacation, the boys play in the sand and water, eat well, ride on a motorcycle, go to a carnival, and experience other new and exciting things as they quickly learn that there is more to the world than they ever imagined--and they get to meet some very strange characters in the process. But when Misty overhears that Teresa (Victoria Hill) and her husband, Fearless (Sullivan Stapleton), are considering adopting one of them, the battle is on--except for Maps, who is older than the others and instead spends his time with Lucy (Teresa Palmer), experiencing his first romance. Harry Potter Grows Up!
So nice to see Daniel Radcliff (as Maps) in a role other than Harry Potter. He was wonderful! December Boys is about a group of 4 boys (Misty, Spit, Spark and Maps) brought up in an orphanage in the Australian Outback. They are linked by having birthdays in December, hence their group name. A benefactor of the orphanage provides a free summer excursion to their beach house. Since it happens to coincide with the December Boys birthday, they are chosen for the first excursion. Their stay at The Cove is filled with rites of passage including Maps first sexual experience and the general theme pitting the loyalties of friendship versus the overwhelming desire to belong to someone. There is also some brief but graphic clips of breast cancer parents of younger and/or more sensitive children may wish to look out for. All in all a charming and heart-warming movie about growing up and the true nature of family.

December Boys - Great coming of age movie
I enjoyed watching December Boys. I had tried reading the book, but it was harder to understand it. There is a few top nudity, so it may not be too appropriate for some younger audiences, but overall, it should be viewed. Being adopted was the goals of the orphaned, and in this movie, one can really see the wants of the boys to be adopted. Daniel Radcliffe was good as Maps, who is the oldest of the December Boys. He had resigned himself that he would never be adopted because he was older. He also felt very betrayed when his friend, Lucy, goes back home after the holidays. To Maps, everyone that he likes always leave him or disappoint him. So, Maps maintains his distance. The other characters were very good and the actor who plays Misty, is exceptionally talented. Much, To my Surprise, a real winner for Daniel Radcliff (aka Harry Potter)!
The best thing about watching a film this simple is that you start off not expecting much of anything. It's just like life is, either it's going to spark your interest or it's not. In the case of December Boys, it became extremely intriguing to see the inner life of a working orphanage run by nuns and the whole bit in the Australian outback. We soon find out that Misty seems to be the onw recanting the events, much like John-Boy in the Waltons, but from a point way into the future like he's written all this down in some book. So we have Maps (Radcliffe), Misty (Lee Cormie), Sparks (Christian Byers) and Spit (James Fraser) sent on a journey that will test their close friendship, and as usual, each will come face to face with their individual challenge that will forever change their ... Gee, I sound like a generic trailer, but trust me, although the premise might sound cliché, December Boys hinges very heavily on the delivery of the child actors for its success. While the spotlight might be on Radcliffe and Cormie, Byers and Fraser each have their own charm, but are restrained by the frequency of their character's on-screen appearance. The landscape of Kangaroo Island adds vast scale to this relatively small movie, opening our eyes to natural geographical wonders, becoming a character in itself, with its inhabitants mere players on its grounds. "What's the big deal about having parents anyway?" Maps (Daniel Radcliffe) retorts to his summer fling Lucy (Teresa Palmer). Maps is the eldest of four orphan boys who get sent for a seaside holiday with an elderly couple. Misty (Lee Cormie) is the youngest and the artistic one of the brood. Sparks (Christian Byers) is good with mechanical things, while Spit (James Fraser) is so named for what he does best. From the very beginning, we find an underlying theme that these 4 somehow are protected by most famous lady of the water (Mother Mary) as seen from the eyes of Misty, who seems to have some form of power to see things others don't. As the film progresses, we find this underlying theme of protection, just as when Misty (or was it Spit) accidentally falls off one of the cliffs into the water and begins to descend along with Maps only to be rescued before witnessing an apparition of the Holy Mother looking upon them about to drown. This somehow seems to be a pinnacle moment in the film. The scene somehow puts everything into perspective as we soon find out afterward that many years would have separated them from their self made family, however, Island would somehow reunite them in love at the passing of Maps in their old age. Radcliffe delivers and extremely balanced view of his character much different than his appearances in Potter and shows that he's definitely got the right stuff to take himself in a direction that will certainly bring him into adult stardom. I will warn you, if your cry easily or you tend to cry at things like romantic comedies, Old Yeller, and that sort of thing, you might want to get some handkerchiefs ready for this one. It's not as sad as much as it is that you see that these orphans are really going to be alright without parents. Teresa Palmer as Lucy is absolutely beautiful and gives the whole film a thrill because her presence with Radcliffe really shines. I also liked the characters Fearless, Teresa, Bandy and his wife. They all seemed like so very nice people. All in all, the overall pleasantness of this film makes it one of those films that will stick.

I loved this movie from beginning to end. It was a wonderful story of growing up and as the memories are long distant everything seems so much more magical and larger than life. As it really does when we are adults looking back at our childhood. I thought the acting was excellent and it was very well cast. Daniel Radcliffe plays a very subdued character far removed from HARRY POTTER and shows that he has the talent to continue in the business as an adult. The other 3 boys are good finds and I am sure we will see more of them in the future. While there is only a small cast, each one has a strong role and Mr & Mrs McAnsh are truly memorable. Kangaroo Island is absolutely stunning and from the dusty outback to the crystal clear coast, the visual splendour is a feast for the eyes. Don't expect ... I loved this movie from beginning to end. Praise for "December Boys"
I had read a review for this movie in an entertainment magazine that was quite favorable. So, I decided to get this DVD, as I was anxious to see "Harry Potter" in a non-"Harry" role. I was pleasently surprised at Daniel Ratcliffe's acting. The movie is superb, although a little quiet. It is just a wonderful story of orphans getting an opportunity they would never have, and growing up in the process. The photography is also beautiful, and the rest of the cast is just as talented!
