About this product

Product Information

A handheld port of Contra III: The Alien Wars for the Super NES, Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX features the same type of run-and-gun, shoot-'em-up action, and includes all four side-view levels of the original game. Missing are the two top-down stages, which have been replaced by two side-scrolling platform levels from Contra: Hard Corps for the Genesis. A two-player link mode lets gamers engage in the popular cooperative action that has become a staple of the series over the years.

Players control one of two special forces comrades (Jimbo and Sully) on a mission to save Neo City from the clutches of the scurrilous Red Falcon. This involves running, jumping, climbing, riding (in a tank), flying (aboard missiles), and shooting through six stages filled with terrorists, snipers, jet motorcycles, Man-Faced Mutts, Para-Slugs, Mutant Megasquitoes, Psycho Cyclers, and other bad guys. Bosses include such hulking behemoths as Robo-Corpse and Beast Kimkoh.

Players begin the game toting a standard issue rifle. By shooting down weapon pods and grabbing the resultant power-up icons, players can switch out their weapon for spread fire, homing missiles, laser fire, crash (explodes on contact), or flamethrower. Players can also sacrifice their weapon upgrade by snatching a barrier power-up, which makes the character temporarily invincible.

Unlike Contra III: The Alien Wars, this game has a password feature for saving level progression.

  • Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX

I'm a Contra fan, and I loved Contra III when it was released on the Super NES about a decade ago. This port brings some of the fun back, but the GBA version lacks the variety that Contra has always included in its games, and I think it was a mistake to replace the overhead levels with more side-scrolling levels. And the overhead levels would have been much better suited for the GBA system, especially in the link cable department. I would have had no problem with more levels of side-scrolling action, but to remove these overhead levels just makes the game more tedious and less imaginative. It's a good, fun shooter, but surprisingly short and just not as great as I was expecting it to be.

  • Great Shooter!! Instant Fun!

Great Game!! A handheld port of the original Super Nintendo game Contra 3: The Alien Wars. (The top-down levels are replaced with the train level from Contra: Hard Corps). I found this game to be very entertaining. After playing through the first few levels a few times you'll be able to reach level 4 or 5 with ease - and every single time they are exciting. Amazing music and sound effects also boost the re-playability of this great title. There is a password-based load game system, however in this day and age I've often found myself wondering 'what kind of notes am I supposed to write..' on my DS apps, iPOD aps, etc.. and this became an instant use. With a DS or GBA in your pocket having this game in it - you will never get bored.

  • Vintage Contra

If you like the series, you'll love this game! It's pretty straight forward, it's basically a run and gun shooter the whole way through the game. It's got a similar feel to the ones we already love (Contra, Super C, Shattered Soldier, Contra 4). If you're a newcomer to the series, it's still a great game, and you should definitely check it out. One thing different about this Contra from some of the rest is that you basically have a machine gun the whole way through the game rather than your regular slow shooter, which is nice since there seems to be a few more bad guys to blow up in this one. Graphics are nice, and the gameplay is challenging, just like the rest of the Contra games. All in all, you won't be disappointed with this one for the Game Boy Advance. Worth the money.

  • Nostalgic at it's finest

Great game and enjoyable game play

  • Very great version of contra 3 in GBA format. Highly recommend for all ages

What can I say about Contra that isnt already well known. This SNES game is taken to GBA format with killer graphics and a well extended game play. Love it and have been playing this one for years I just purchased another copy to play two player mode.
