First of all, Seamonsters is a superb album, although I have some issues with this release. Some Americans might find David Gedge's vocal style a bit odd at first, but that's mostly because he doesn't hide his thick British accent. Once you get used to that, the music can unfold. The Wedding Present have strong elements of The Velvet Underground and My Bloody Valentine, without being derivative of either. (In fact, the cover of VU's "She's My Best Friend" is one of the only reasons to buy this re-release over the original.) Some of the guitar work on this album is so MBV that it has to be a conscious reference. Ultimately, in my opinion, The Wedding Present transcends My Bloody Valentine in musical value. 'Dalliance', the first song on this album, is a brilliant example of songwriter Gedge's ability to add layer upon layer of intensity. Jangling guitars crescendo into a seething froth of distortion. Gedge's voice and lyrics embody smoldering passion, jealousy and infidelity. It spills over into his guitar sound--I've never before heard a guitar that sounds jealous. However, I have a bone to pick with this re-release. In several ways it dimishes the simple brilliance of the original album. There's nothing wrong with the additional songs, but it's easy to see why they weren't included in the original album. They don't mesh with the character of the album. The extensive liner notes (versus none in the original) are written by a windy Brit rock critic, but I guess I'm glad to have read some of the info. The primary problem with the re-release, however, is revealed on the sticker on the front. It trumpets both the fact that the album was recorded by the legendary Steve Albini and that it has been 'remastered.' Remastering is a process by which the original sound of an song or album is changed in some way, supposedly for the better. Reading between the lines one realizes that the album's sound, as originally chosen by Steve and the band, was somehow unsatisfactory to the powers that be. Albini's characteristic edgy sound, perhaps, was deemed unsuitable for larger audiences. It is a double slap in the face of Albini, who prefers not to be credited at all. Slapping his name on the front of an album to gain credibility while presenting a toned-down version of his sound. I simply can't separate my feelings about this hypocrisy from my perception of the album's sound. It sounds flat and lifeless to me compared to the crisp vigor of the original. I have no idea how much of that perception is all in my head. If you can't find the original version, by all means get this one. Seamonsters is one of the best albums of all time--don't let my quibbling dimish your enjoyment of this classic.
