Hard to love hasegawa. They offer a line up of kits of rarity and craftsmanship. But they will build in incorrectness and lack of detail. But only some of the time. But my complaint is not with incorrectness. The ship in question, the uss gambier bay, lies 2 miles deep off the east coast of Samar island. The ship yard that built it, Kaiser shipbuilding, was totally gone from this world back in 1980 when I lived in Vancouver Washington as a teenager. So I have no idea what configuration of railing kept people from traipsing off the deck or catwalks. Yet the style in which hasegawa made the photo etch railings is a departure from the style I'm accustomed to. Granted, if you can manage to install them, they are probably a nice clean job. What I managed to do was break them. At the bend. At ... Hard to love hasegawa. They offer a line up of kits of rarity and craftsmanship. But they will build in incorrectness and lack of detail. What I managed to do was break them. At the bend. At the non bend. At the folding base. The lack of brass in them is ludicrous. Presumably, when making a fret of photo etch parts, the majority of the metal is given up to make the shape. So it's not done in the interest of frugalness. Then why so fragile? Why do the parts break on the bend back. I've used a lot of PE. GMM doesn't do that. I've ripped GMM parts off the ship, dunked them in acetone to clean the paint and glue off and bent them back into shape and put them back to use. Try that with any part of the exclusive railing for hasegawas gambier bay basic PE fret. Just try cutting the part off the fret. Why do they have to be so thin? This is the only PE railings fret available for this ship that costs less than $100. What you get for your money is frustration and a trip back to the drawing board to find some generic railings for a Casablanca class carrier. All has yet to be lost. I'd have paid the price for the safety nets that are on the same fret. They can't be as fragile as the railings. Can they? Don't know. Have to get the railings on to find out.

Great detail set to enhance your Gambier Bay
Technically, this is the first of 2 sets that you can use to upgrade a 1/350 Gambier Bay. Offered from Hasegawa to be used on the Hasegawa kit, it fits very well to the model and provides a level of detail that enhances the basic look of the carrier. Be warned though: you have just enough parts to work on the carrier AND the railings are of the "stantion" type--which means there's no "bottom run" to attach the PE to the model. And f you make a mistake, you're looking at replacement parts---perhaps from an alternate manufacturer. Also note that this set does not include inclined ladders (afterall, this is called their "basic" set), so if you're looking for radars, ladders and the aircraft crane, you'll need to look at the QG45 set or again, look to alternative offerings from Flyhawk, ... Technically, this is the first of 2 sets that you can use to upgrade a 1/350 Gambier Bay. Offered from Hasegawa to be used on the Hasegawa kit, it fits very well to the model and provides a level of detail that enhances the basic look of the carrier. Be warned though: you have just enough parts to work on the carrier AND the railings are of the "stantion" type--which means there's no "bottom run" to attach the PE to the model. The etching detail is pretty good, but the because of the "stantion" type method of having to affix the PE to the model, this is probably best suited to those with a bit more experience with photo etch. Not really a good idea for beginners.
