Some very good content - but it could have been better
This is an enjoyable watch, and it does have some really good content. Interesting interviews on the subject with a number of people with something worth sharing, especially 70's girlfriend Linda Thompson, the Denver police detectives, the Denver newscaster, Sonny West, Jerry Schilling, backup singer Myrna Smith, nurse Marion Cocke, two of the car salesmen, and the one Jordannaire. But I was a little surprised and disappointed that the producers didn't track down more of the beneficiaries of Elvis's exorbitant generosity to interview - more of the "plain folk" who weren't part of the entourage, but were instead random encounters, in which the recipient experienced two of the biggest shocks of their lives - meeting Elvis, and receiving out of the blue such astonishingly grand gifts. Where were some of the plain folk, whose cars had broken down on the bridge into Memphis, who were picked up taken to pick out their own Cadillac? Where were the concert audience members who were given incredibly expensive rings off his fingers? I know it could have been difficult to track some of these people down, but it would have been well worth it. And why was Myrna Smith the only Sweet Inspiration interviewed? Why was the interview with the one Jordannaire so brief, and seemingly conducted while he was on the go? What about the band members? Did they ever benefit from Elvis's extravagant gifts? Did his 70's orchestra leader, Joe Guercio? Where were some of the other Memphis mafia members, especially Joe Esposito? Still, this is a really interesting subject, and I enjoyed the video - the interview subjects all had good insights, so it's a good watch. Another plus is that the original song compositions (which are all about Elvis) that break up the segments are for the most part actually pretty good - good enough that I'm going to consider buying the companion soundtrack CD featuring complete versions of each song. That was a pleasant surprise. All in all, if you can find this video for $10-$12 it's worth the price. If you're budget conscious though, I would not pay $20 or more for it. A good watch for people interested in Elvis the man, and the singular aspect of his tremendous generosity and the pleasure he derived from springing extravagant gifts upon often unsuspecting persons, who would never have had the means to buy for themselves what Elvis bought for them. Some interesting related photos are seen, some of which are directly relevant to the subject, a number of which I had not ever seen elsewhere. This video is not about Elvis the entertainer, so someone looking for a documentary about his artistry or career, should look elsewhere.
