Seller Notes: “This antique oval brooch measures 2 1/4 inches high and 1 3/4 inches wide. It is crafted in 14 ... “This antique oval brooch measures 2 1/4 inches high and 1 3/4 inches wide. It is crafted in 14 karat yellow gold and features a hand carved shell cameo possibly depicting a Roman Tyche-deity who governed the fortune and prosperity of a city, its destiny. We see her right facing profile with upswept hair with a laurel wreath (signifying hope and victory) and a mural crown (a crown like the walls of a city). The cameo is beautifully carved revealing the browns left from the original shell. It is set in a bezel setting surrounded by tiny seed pearls strung on wire. The back of the brooch has a straight pin stem and locking hook clasp. This type of finding was patented in 1900 as a "lever safety catch" for pins offering us a glimpse as to the period of production. There is a collapsible pendant bail allowing the piece to be worn as a pendant. It weighs 19.2 grams. Stamped, "14K".the straight, Roman nose (or aquiline nose) is indicative of pieces from the earlier half of the 19th Century.”
