Amazing footage, Great viewing experience, Learn while you watch
I bought this to watch with my family during winter break. We already liked watching animal/nature documentaries so this was an ideal buy. I decided to buy this DVD so that I could watch something beneficial with my time. All I said to myself after watching it was "Whoa, I totally forgot how amazing this planet is." This a wonderful little reminder of the miracle of earth; filmed and package for our viewing convenience. So let's start out with the two negative I have to say about this product. The only complaint I would have is that the packaging could have been better. The 2 dvds are held in a sleeve that is of this cardboard. When opened, the DVDs slide into slits that are cut midway; so that holds the bottom of the DVD. Though it performs its function of holding the CDs in place, it ... Though it performs its function of holding the CDs in place, it would have been nice to have some sort of raised plastic ring to place the discs on. This would prevent the back of the discs directly touching and sliding into the sleeves (potentially scratching them). But if placed with care the damage can easily be avoided. As for the second complaint, the DVD packaging itself is sort of paper-like. It would have been nicer if it were plastic, or had a protective plastic layer to it (the inside as well), BUT, since this is a DVD that is geared toward reminding us that the planet is beautiful and that we could preserve it, this minor detail can be dismissed since we are looking at recycled material packaging. I'll let it slide. As for the GOOD NEWS. Very intriguing, entertaining, and AMAZING. The footage is stunning. Each chapter runs for nearly an hour and is followed by a mini diary, where they explain and show the audience how they filmed. My favorite is in the last chapter "The Great Feast" where they showed how a cameraman captured a humpback whale gulping a ball of fish and could have literally been swallowed by a whale. The time and effort it takes to film this should get everyone's applause and aww. Just be sure to hold you jaw, and drool if you are stuck in wonder. Also, the narration is witty, and the story line makes the entire experience flow. It blew my mind. I bought this for $15 but it is easily worth way more than that. For anybody that is interested in nature, and want to explore the world from their couch (since it is not likely that they will be able to experience all this in real life, this is a great buy, worth the money. I loved it, family loved it, way better than watching a comedy sitcom on TV. We actually were entertained, and learned something After watching this I look forward to watching the other BBC series I purchased: Planet Earth, Blue Planet, and Life. Let the learning begin.
