A mischievous magician gains the wisdom to become a powerful ruler after being swept away to a land of magic and mystery as director Sam Raimi and screenwriters Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire (RABBIT HOLE) explore the genesis of author L. Frank Baum's enduring tales of Oz. Shady illusionist Oscar Diggs (James Franco) enchants curious audiences at a Kansas circus. A self-professed con man, he's a fast-talking performer who aspires to follow in the footsteps of inventors like Thomas Edison. Oscar is being chased across the circus grounds by the rampaging Strongman when a tornado blows in and everyone runs for cover. Seeing a hot-air balloon as his only chance for escape, the illusionist jumps in and cuts himself free. Magically transported to the wondrous world of Oz, he soon encounters Theodora (Mila Kunis), a temperamental witch who surmises that he is the wizard named after their land (Oscar's nickname is Oz), foretold to fall from the sky, defeat a nasty witch, and ascend to the throne. Theodora takes Oscar to the Emerald City to meet her sister Evanora (Rachel Weisz), a powerful witch who reveals that he cannot become the rightful ruler of Oz until he's accomplished his mission. Later, as Oscar and his new flying-monkey companion Finley (voice of Zach Braff) prepare to face their fearsome enemy, they're joined by the fragile but fearless China Girl (voice of Joey King) and benevolent witch Glinda the Good (Michelle Williams), who help them prepare for the arduous battle ahead. Together with the brave people of Oz, Oscar draws up a plan to rid the land of evil once and for all, and become the great and powerful king who will rule from his throne in the Emerald City.

    Good story, bad casting

    I love that we get to go back to Oz and see some new and familiar people but to me James Franco looks like he doesn't want to be in the movie. Movie would've been better with a different lead actor

    If you've only seen The Wizard Of Oz on TV, video tape, or DVD, you've never really experienced it. The restoration in terms of color and resolution is gorgeous, and the 3D is amazingly effective as a window into the world of Oz, exhibiting impressive depth and dimensionality without apparent double image ghosting. The image is pristine throughout and most definitely the best that an audience of any age has ever seen. And the sound is pristine as well, with effective dynamics and deep bass extension. You owe it to your childhood memories and to your children and grandchildren's memories to experience this remastered Blu-ray presentation. You will not be disappointed!     Not your average sequel

    A worthy spin off of the classic with breathtaking scenery and effects! After showing us a glimpse of how the wizzard went from scam artist to benevolent ruler of the Emerald City it touches on the development of the witches from the play Wicked, and manages to tie all three up into a cohesive narrative. It introduces a few memorable characters and plot twists that remain true to the feeling of the origional stories by L. Frank Baum. You do not have to be a child to enjoy this film. It is fantasy at its best. The casting is great and the colors are as amazing today as the color portion of the Judy Garland film was in its day. I assume it is even better in 3D.     Great film! Especially for Wizard of Oz fans! Highly recommend it!

    I am not a fan of Disney movies, and this type of film is outside my usual genre, but I love the original Wizard of Oz, so I bought this movie because it explains what happens before the original movie story. Well, I was amazed at how much I loved this movie! I am rarely moved by a film, but I found myself crying during the China Doll introduction. This character is terrific! The steam punk inventions are really cool, the actors are believable, and the story is very interesting, and revealing. I was a little disturbed at Mila Kunis as the wicked witch, but other than that I found the rest of the actors did a great job. Overall, this is a terrific film, and I was very moved, and entertained!

    Stupid Movie My Grand Kids Love it

    Even for an Ole Godger it has a lot of colorful scenery and it gives me the chance to be around my grand kids, How do you put a value on that
