The fourth album by the band Klaatu, Endangered Species
The fourth outing by these three Canadian musician's is a grey area for fans and a departure of sorts from the style and sound of previous three records. Klaatu was known as the band people thought were the Beatles and after the second album Hope the rumor had run it's course (had anyone done a modicum of research they'd have found an appearance on Canadian TV from before first album came out). They started revealing themselves on the Sir Army Suit cover drawing and their names on this release (with their picture finally on the Canadian only released LP Magentalane). As stated earlier, this is an album not one would expect from them. The Sonic landscape of the first LP is missing, the programs influence Hope not here and the Pop stylings os Sir Army Suit not here. Then there is this ... Not knocking it, any other band have made this record it might have had a cult following, it's just not a KLAATU record. At Capital records "request" they went to California to work on the record. One of the aims was to make it sound more "American". This includes removing previous work and the drummer Terry Draper basically only on the record dropping coins in a register for the effect heard on the album. Dee Long and John Wolocshuk (sp?) Worked on their songs in the studio with studio musician's. The songs recorded are good, just not what you'd expect from Klaatu. Keep in mind, the album is not a loss at all musically. Knee Deep in Love is a great Pop ballad and the album closer All Good Things is a song written by lead singer John W. after learning his dog died while in California. The other songs, left to the bands devices in my opinion, could and would have fleshed out to the sound a Klaatu fan expected. Please also note, I am reviewing the Bullseye of Canada CD release. This (and their edition of Sir Army Suit, sold separately) kick the Sonic rear end of the Attic records 2-fer CD, if you buy these two CD's, go that route.

Klaatu is one of those bands that we re not well known, but it's worth a listen or two. For the people with an ear for different sounds.
