About this product

Product Information

THE THIN MAN is the first installment in one of the most successful detective serials in film history, based on the 1932 novel by Dashiell Hammett about stylish sleuthing spouses Nick (William Powell) and Nora Charles (Myrna Loy). Powell and Loy's quick-witted repartee set a Hollywood tradition in their crackling debut as they investigate the disappearance of a wealthy inventor. A blockbuster hit in 1934, THE THIN MAN's convoluted mystery plot moves at a rapid-fire pace that will delight modern viewers. Director W.S. Van Dyke's fast but loose methods helped stars Powell and Loy create great verisimilitude in their marital relationship in spite of the highly stylized script. Even the couple's pet dog, Asta, brings home a finely tuned performance, and the supporting roles are filled with a crew of comical characters. THE THIN MAN must not be missed by fans of the detective genre.

Great Packaging but two upsetting messages sent about postage payment. I paid the full amount as stated on ebay but dealer thinks that this is wrong. He should take this up with ebay as this was not my fault. Not a nice experience.

Powell & Loy are better in other collaborations

As a HUGE fan of William Powell & Myrna Loy films, I am always AMAZED that the THIN MAN series is so often cited as they "greatest work". I find it generally their weakest work (I LOVE YOU AGAIN, DOUBLE WEDDING, LIBELLED LADY, etc... are all, in my opinion, WAY better, funnier, more charming & less "dated". I find the THIN MAN series generally so-so -- stiff direction, clunky script & their "endless boozing" (supposedly hilarious) simply hasn't aged well. Ditto for Asta, with his un-funny cutaways that REALLY overstay their welcome. So, great, charismatic leads & occasional amusing moments.... but my advice is if you like Powell & Loy, check out their OTHER collaborations ahead of the THIN MAN 6 pack

  • The Thin Man

I purchased this as part of a seven DVD set, along with the other five Thin Man films and Alias Nick and Nora, documentaries of William Powell and Myrna Loy. This great film was directed by W.S. (One-Take Woody) Van Dyke and he took 12 days to shoot the picture. The Thin Man was photographed by the prolific James Wong Howe and produced by the equally-prolific Hunt Stromberg. The cast was legendary, with performances by Nat Pendleton and Cesar Romero. This is one of the most entertaining detective films ever, as Powell and Loy are the light-hearted, playful couple Nick and Nora Charles. They also share camera time with their dog Asta while matching each other drink for drink. This film borders on screwball comedy while throwing in a little mystery here and there. Overall, it's a brilliant ...

  • The Thin Man

This is the first of six movies William Powell and Myrna Loy starred together in. In my opinion, it is also the best. The way these two played-off each other is really an enjoyable thing to watch. He plays Nick Charles, a retired detective who just can't seem to remain retired. Myrna is his apparently wealthy wife who encourages him to keep on sleuthing. Maureen O'Sullivan also is the daughter of an old friend of Nick's, and she wants him to help clear up her fathers name from a murder charge. This is a mystery but also a comedy and is a wonderful movie. They also have a wire haired fox terrier, Asta, that deserves star billing as well (if you have a Terrier of any type you will know what I mean.) This has to be one of the best 100 movies of all time.

  • Thin Movie about a Thin Man

If you're a Dashiell Hammett fan, you may or may not like this movie. In contrast to the 1941 version of The Maltese Falcon, for instance, this version of The Thin Man was adapted to be more 'light-hearted' and whimsical. Notably, the dog Asta becomes one of the main 'characters', mugging in typical cutesy ersatz 'doggie reactions' to various events in the movie. Also, the actor who plays Nick Charles makes broad, exaggerated jaw-drop reactions to witty remarks by his wife... kind of a poor-man's laugh track, or a cue to slower members of the audience that something outrageous was said. Bonus snark: This is not film noir, it's more 'film skinny latte'. (Apparently, this kind of thing got worse, and the plots much thinner, in the Thin Man sequels, which I have not seen (and will not see). ...
