MIGHTY APHRODITE is Woody Allen's stab at Greek comedy/tragedy, and it is wildly successful. Allen stars as Lenny Weinrib, a sportswriter married to ambitious Amanda Sloan (Helena Bonham Carter), who desperately wants her own art gallery in New York City and is willing to play the game to get it. Amanda convinces a reluctant Lenny to adopt, and they end up with beautiful Max. Lenny soon becomes obsessed with finding out who Max's biological parents are, and he is not exactly happy when he discovers that the mother is a high-pitched actress wanna-be who is also a minor porn star and hooker (Mira Sorvino, in an Oscar-winning performance). Lenny is determined to turn her life around--but at the same time is forced to examine his own marriage, which is failing.Allen intersperses New York City vignettes with hysterical scenes of a Greek chorus, led by F. Murray Abraham, chiming in about Lenny's life, comparing it to Greek drama, and breaking out into song-and-dance numbers. The scenes in which the two worlds meet--both in New York and in the Greek theater, are wonderfully witty and incisive. This charming light comedy from Woody Allen also features fine cameo appearances by Olympia Dukakis, David Ogden Stiers, Jack Warden, and Tony Sirico.

Mighty triumph for Mira Sorvino.
This is a Greek Tragedy type of film with lots of laughs throughout. Mira Sorvino as dim-witted Linda the prostitute is a million lsughs throughout (she won the academy award for best supporting actress).By the end of the film Linda has Been made so adorable (and human with faults like anyone else) that you just hope she ends up with a better life....which she does. It's a well-done romantic comedy with a great script and go9d acting.This is a Greek Tragedy type of film with lots of laughs throughout. One of Woody's best!!
After reaching a high point in his 70's comedies with 1977's "Annie Hall", Woody Allen's films of the 80's and early to mid 90's became more introspective and less zany. With Mighty Aphrodite Woody manages to juxtopose the two approaches in a truly satisfying way. A straight-forward and realistic storyline is punctuated by moments of the fantastic via narration by a greek chorus, and thus Woody delivers a hilariously effective film which perfectly balances the classic with the modern. Mira Sorvino's Oscar winning performance is a revelation. Her ability to be dim-witted one moment, and poignant the next is an absolute joy. Being the perfect mix of intelligence, talent and stunning beauty, Miss Sorvino truly is her generation's Julie Newmar. And ...
