Disappointing RPG for those that enjoy immersing storylines.
I had high expectations for an RPG by Squaresoft from 1998. This era seemed to be their golden age when it came to RPGs. Unique gameplay, epic quests, immersing stories. I had been used to the Final Fantasy series, and others like Xenogears and Vagrant Story. Even other companies produced wonderful RPGs with great stories like Legend of Dragoon. This is what I was hoping for when I bought Saga Frontier. The premise seemed amazing, with 7 different characters, each with their own story. The trouble is, there's hardly any story! I played through as Blue first, and there's literally maybe one or two paragraphs of story driven dialogue the entire game!!! I was shocked! Emelia had a more engaging plot, but it was still very, very weak. Music and graphics wise, the ... I had high expectations for an RPG by Squaresoft from 1998. This era seemed to be their golden age when it came to RPGs. Unique gameplay, epic quests, immersing stories. I had been used to the Final Fantasy series, and others like Xenogears and Vagrant Story. Even other companies produced wonderful RPGs with great stories like Legend of Dragoon. This is what I was hoping for when I bought Saga Frontier. The premise seemed amazing, with 7 different characters, each with their own story. The trouble is, there's hardly any story! I played through as Blue first, and there's literally maybe one or two paragraphs of story driven dialogue the entire game!!! I was shocked! Emelia had a more engaging plot, but it was still very, very weak. Music and graphics wise, the game is pretty weak. The pre-rendered backgrounds were nothing special. It was confusing to locate the multiple exits on any given screen. Sometimes you had to luckily, blindly stumble upon the exit to figure out where you have to go. The gameplay is fun. Battling is basically everything in Saga Frontier, and it is at least fun to do. The game requires quite a bit of grinding, but I didn't find myself minding to do it. I did find myself wanting to beat the game as quickly as I could through 2 of the 7 scenarios, so it felt like I got my money's worth before moving on to a better game. If you can find this game for $10, it would be worth the buy just to experience it, but it certainly isn't worth much more than that.
