Stewart takes ownership of these thoughtfully selected tracks crafted by some of the best songwriters of our time, including Bob Dylan ("If Not for You"), Van Morrison ("Crazy Love"), Bob Seger ("Still the Same") and John Fogerty ("Have You Ever Seen the Rain" which will be the first radio single from the album). Several of Stewart's other selections sound like they were written for his signature, inimitable rasp in the first place, like Bonnie Tyler's "It's a Heartache" and "Fooled Around and Fell in Love," a 1976 hit for Elvin Bishop.

    Still the Same, Indeed...

    I've always loved Rod Stewart, and enjoyed this collection. It was especially interesting to hear Stewart's rendition of "It's A Heartache ," because when Bonnie Tyler's original version of that song came out, her voice was compared to Rod Stewart's. The only real complaint I have is that most of the songs are given very similar arrangements to their original versions. I've heard other cover songs performed by Stewart during his career which he made his own. Not so much here.

    Great Voice Needs Better Songs

    Yes, he still has the great voice, but the song selection is questionable. Why in the world would he cover, It's A Heartache, which was a bad Rod imitation as done by Bonnie Tyler? Still The Same is not even a good Bob Seger song. Even on the better songs, Fogerty's Have You Ever Seen The Rain and Bread's Everything I Own, pedestrian arrangements ensure nothing special happens. The Eagles' Best Of My Love and Badfinger's Day After Day are listenable, along with Fooled Around And Fell In Love. Remember when each of Rod's albums had a couple of great cover songs? I suggest you make a compilation disc of those tracks (Dylan's You've Been On My Mind, Temptations' I'm Losing You, Luther Ingram's If Loving You Is Wrong, etc.) and ...
