They came out of the box fully working and they sound good with normal aptx. You'll need a device that supports aptx adaptive. I have a Samsung galaxy series so they do not have adaptive. I had to get a seperate dongle called Btd 600 which is also from Sennheiser to get adaptive on my phone. As for my ears aptx adaptive sound clearer and more pronounce than normal aptx so its worth it imo. Use a lossless music streaming service that supports hi res audio. Also get the Sennheiser app.

    Phenomenal sound and excellent app!!!

    Beautiful, awesome sound, decent sound cancelling and incredible battery life. I, however, and much to my dismay, am considering returning them because I have a fairly large head and the headphones get uncomfortable after a couple of hours of movies watching when the over ear cups exert pressure on the temples of my eyeglasses behind the ears. This is not a problem for music listening as the eyeglass aren't needed. We'll see. The sound is sooooo good that I may just renew my prescription for contact lenses.
