About this product

Product Information

"On what slender threads do life and fortune hang." Nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read Thrown in prison for a crime he has not committed, Edmond Dantes is confined to the grim fortress of If. There he learns of a great hoard of treasure hidden on the Isle of Monte Cristo and he becomes determined not only to escape, but also to unearth the treasure and use it to plot the destruction of the three men responsible for his incarceration. Dumas' epic tale of suffering and retribution, inspired by a real-life case of wrongful imprisonment, was a huge popular success when it was first serialized in the 1840s. Robin Buss's lively English translation is complete and unabridged, and remains faithful to the style of Dumas's original. This edition includes an introduction, explanatory notes and suggestions for further reading. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Great book and an awesome value

Love this book! And I love even more that I could get it so inexpensively. There were some crayon marks on the interior pages, but nothing that covered the text. Still, overall a great value.

  • Modern Translation Depicts A New Story

If you think you know The Count of Monte Cristo, think again. I thought I did. I've watched a series a couple of decades ago on TV. I enjoyed the story back then. I was reading world classics and thought I'll give The Count of Monte Cristo a try. When I was looking for a copy to read I saw that there were several translations available. To choose the best translation I read quite a bit of the reviews. In one, the reviewer (who also read the original French and several English translations) suggested that the best translation is done by Robin Buss. Turns out until Robin Buss all the translations were done when the book first came out. Meaning the English translators of the time actually butchered the original story and rewrote it to the extent of changing the number of villains to one ...

  • Classic Romanticism requires a long-term commitment

This book is long and has lots of characters to keep track of, but the payoff for being patient and persistent is worth it. Yes, the book is a couple of hundred years old, but the story of love, vengeance, and noble heroism is satisfying. This version has a wonderful cover and a comfortable heft and feel to it. Buy it and read it!
