Spectacular low light performance tack sharp for a zoom

Beautiful images at the wife angle side of focal length spectrum. I went with a zoom because I wanted some versatility and I am not disappointed at the sharpness across the entire spread. Great low light performance.

  • Top critical review

Probably my biggest disappointment from Canon lenses

I bought this lens as an upgrade from my current 17-40/4L lens. But now I'm not sure which lens should I keep. The only advantage of 16-35 is f2.8, which can come in handy for night pictures. In comparison to 17-40/4L: 16-35 is better at wide end at f4-f5.6, 17-40 is better in all other cases. The 16-35 is especially terrible at 35mm on the edges until you set the aperture to at least f9, then the results are "ok". The build quality is very good and I hope this won't struggle so much with dust collection from the inside of the first optical element which applies for 17-40. So I was expecting excellent lens for this price range, but got just a mediocre one.

  • A truly excellent lens that improves on its predecessor.

I bought this Mk II lens because I 'lost' my 16-35 MkI version, I use it on both my 5D MkII and my back-up 5D, I often have to shoot the insides of canal narrow boats and for this and any interior shoots there can be few lenses to rival it. The 2.8 aperture gathers light fantastically, this lens is NEVER out of the bag. The Mk I version? well after I had bought this my wife found the 'missing' lens (knocked on the floor and rolled under the desk!) so I've now had a chance to view (and try) then side by side, the principal difference is that the MkII is about 8 or 9 mm longer in the body and I notice that the MkII doesn't suffer from the very slight vignetting that could be seen in the otherwise excellent MkI when used at full width. Both lens are superb, there ...

  • Canon EF 16-35 2.8L II - The Ultimate Canon Ultra-Wide

If you're looking for an ultra-wide zoom for your full-frame canon camera, look no further than the 16-35 2.8L II. Don't worry about the price. Just buy it. If you understand the inherent limitations of an ultra-wide zoom, you'll be left speechless by the performance of this lens--I am. With its wide focal lengths and apertures, it makes a great indoor party lens. It's also wonderful for photojournalist work. Other than the extreme corners, the images are flawless wide-open. Because of its wide focal lengths, the lens is not really suitable for traditional portrait work but its perfect for capturing groups and contextual or environmental portraits. The wide aperture is more useful for utilizing available light than blurring backgrounds, though with a close subject, appealing ...

  • Superb color and contrast, build quality is fantastic.

The color quality, contrast and sharpness of this lens is superb and distinct from the 11-16mm Tokina, and the 17-55mm Canon. Fantastic on the Canon C100 -- wide-angle to medium zoom lens. -- On the 5DmkIII it's a killer extra-wide angle lens, and a sharp 35mm standard. The zoom is internal, so no extending elements on the outside. Has a fairly close, nearly macro, focusing distance. For video, it's the perfect companion to the 24-105mm. The cost is scary and this is often referred to as a specialty lens because it's so wide -- popular among landscape photographers. But I shoot a lot of wide and medium angles using natural light (documentary) and this lens has become my new workhorse. It's also relatively easy to focus with, which makes it great ...
