Possibly The Height Of Thier Music
It's probably been at least 10 years since I had last heard this album, so it was a bit of shock to find I enjoyed it more this time around. I can remember not having liked it too much back when it came out. Having a long and sordid history with the Lizard, it's a bit of a turn around from the raw incoherence of the PureEP, the viciousness of Head or pummeling of Goat. Produced by Steve Albini, this album may possibly be the peak of the Lizards musical virtuosity, as he manages to capture the raw energy of the band without over-polishing the sound. The nearly-incomprehensible groans, grunts, and shrieks from frontman David Yow form an emotional blend that compliments and acts as a framework for Duane Denison's guitar work precisely. David Sims on bass and Mac McNeilly on drums still form ... David Sims on bass and Mac McNeilly on drums still form the "most dangerous rhythm section in rock" - like demented metronomes, the extended drum-and-bass sections and precision timing make even their silences speak volumes. Songs range from the violent opener "Boilermaker" and the powerful thudding "Gladiator" to the staid almost-ballad-like "Zachariah". "The Art of Self-Defense" and "Puss" both ring true to earlier Lizard efforts, and manage to convey the message that the Lizard still means business. This album is a more artistically arranged and accessible sound, while the hidden menace lurks just below the surface popping up every now and then to smack your ears around. While they're not really breaking new ground on this album, the final polishing of this gem removes most of the rough edges that some found hard to swallow.

My favorite album by The Jesus Lizard
The Jesus Lizard- Liar, one of the best albums to come out on Touch and Go during the early 1990's and definitely the best album released by The Jesus Lizard, in my opinion. Definitely buy this if you like raw and brutal-scrape-off-your-face-and-like-it music. An interesting footnote, The Jesus Lizard is currently on a 'one time only' reunion tour. I just saw them here in Seattle at The Capitol Hill Block Party and it Fricking Ruled my world, so see them if you can!!!!The Jesus Lizard- Liar, one of the best albums to come out on Touch and Go during the early 1990's and definitely the best album released by The Jesus Lizard, in my opinion.
