Some Surprising Gems
This is an eclectic collection of mostly early 30's public domain "lost" films. Stay away if you want modern;these reflect the tastes of post-prohibition, post-depression America. There are some surprising gems- use of camera angles, pastiche, layering and exposure. Nothing as textured as later film noir (check out "The Big Combo"), but the medium was still new in the early to mid 30's. A few of the films took me by surprise ("Prison Train" for one). For the money and convenience of having these on disc, it's a remarkable set; just sift through 'til you hit one you like. Plus there's the deco styles, architecture and music. Great for the film buff or to teach what it used to be like. I suspect Tarantino studied a few of these. Can't Wait To Start!
I bought this item as a Christmas present for my fiance. He is obsessed with old Raymond Chandler mystery and crime books, so I thought this would be a great gift. Well, he accidentally found it and has been drooling over it the past week. With 50 movies, you can never go bored with the set, and the actors and actresses starring in them were some of the greatest forgotten of the time. In the golden age of Hollywood, these movies have become either cult classics or genre specific examples of great filming.I bought this item as a Christmas present for my fiance. have not seen them all, but great movies so far. the price was right, they are movies that kids can watch too. there is no bloody guts everywear and my kids and nephews love to watch them.
