About this product

Product Information

Based on the true story of her mother, Mona Golabek describes the inspirational story of Lisa Jura Golabek's escape from Nazi-controlled Austria to England on the famed Kindertransport. Lisa Jura is the only one of 3 sisters to receive the chance of a way out of Austria as her family chooses to send her to London, where she will be able to pursue her dreams of becoming a concert pianist. Separated from her beloved family she bravely endures the trip and a disastrous posting outside London before ending up at the Willesden Lane orphanage. It is there that Lisa's story truly comes to life. There her music inspires the other children and they in turn cheer her on in her efforts to make good on the promise she made to her family to fulfil her musical potential. Through hard work and sheer pluck she wins a scholarship to study piano at the Royal Academy. As she supports herself and her studies she forges a new life but dreams of re-connecting with the family she left behind. The resulting tale delivers a message of the power of music to uplift the human spirit and to grant the individual soul endurance, patience and peace.

  • Best of the best

The Children of Willesden Lane is the best book that I have ever read that describes some of the experiences that musicians encountered during this horrible time in history. I have read several books and watched many videos on this subject and I highly recommend all of them. Some of these wonderful books and videos are Night (Oprah's Book Club),Anne Frank - The Diary of a Young Girl, The Inextinguishable Symphony, Alma Rose: Vienna to Auschwitz, Playing for Time,Bach in Auschwitz [VHS] Schindler's List: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack,Schindler's List All of these books and videos are wonderful but The Children of Willesden Lane was able to convey an exceptional description of day to day living during this difficult time during World War 2. The story is very captivating. The reader is ...

  • I will order used books from now on.

This was a birthday gift for my sister. She just finished reading it and was delighted with it. I told her it was used and she said she couldn't tell the difference. She was so happy I found it. She was having a difficult time buying it at Barnes and Noble. They were out of stock and not sure they'd be able to find it. I was pretty pleased that the book was so clean and unused looking that it could have been brand now.

  • The Children of Willesden Lane

This is the best non-fiction book I have read in years. I would recommend this book to anyone! It is a well written account of what some of the Jewish children went through that were sent to England to be spared the atrocities that were occurring because of the Nazis. Before I read this book, I was unaware of the kindertransports and it opened my eyes even more to the sacraficial choices that were made.

  • Might never have found this book - so glad I did.

My book club chose this book, and it was really a good one. So glad someone noticed and chose it. A true story that reads like a novel.
