About this product

Product Information

A departure for director John Carpenter, STARMAN is a gentle, simple film that won accolades from critics and applause from audiences. Jeff Bridges plays the title character, an alien that has come down to Earth on a peaceful scouting mission. When he takes the form of a recently widowed woman's dead husband he unintentionally involves her in his mission. The alien only has a few days to reach a rendezvous point where he will be picked up by his mothership. Along the way he must discover what he can about human beings and our civilization. He finds out plenty very quickly, as his relationship with the young widow grows very strong as they make their way to the rendezvous point. Meanwhile, the FBI is in hot pursuit after it discovers the discarded landing vehicle, and the alien's own health is deteriorating in Earth's foreign atmosphere. The story tells of the struggle for communication, the pain of letting go, and the search for understanding. Jeff Bridges gives an unforgettable performance as the gentle alien trying his best to cope with being a human. With STARMAN, Carpenter proves he is a master storyteller, not just of horror and science fiction, but of subtle, emotional drama as well.

Great Movie, with an unusual story. Well worth watching even several times over.

I was very Surprised by how good the story and acting was. It is most unusual even for a Science Fiction movie. The filming was great and it kept you on the edge of your seat numerous times. Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen did a very well acted role and the movie left you wanting more at the end. 2 Hours of great entertainment and enjoyment. John S. Brokos

  • Simple, filmed in the style of high artistic and elementary film

Simple, filmed in the style of high artistic and elementary film. Of course, the special effects in our time seem to be pretty naive and cause a smile. But this does not detract one little bit of artistic merit the film. Especially as some special effects to this day can surprise the viewer. Especially the scene with the hair. Yes, and the spacecraft is quite a kindness. A statement of the time simply chic, as well, and always with Carpenter. Something is inimitable in this tape, in addition to an excellent game actors. Something of the good old fiction distant sight and high-flying. When believe in a brighter future. The film raises a lot of emotions and makes you wonder, gently reminding about the social side. Very touching, good quality and soulful, it can be used to placate the girls ...

  • Starman

Starman is a delightful family film, as well as an unusual love story/sci-fi flick directed by the horror king, John Carpenter of 'Holloween' fame. Jeff Bridges, who plays the Starman, gives an Academy Award performance supported by the then, very popular Karen Allen, who is both natural in her performance, and very believable. 'Starman' is a humanistic story, an allegory of love and goodness, as opposed to violence and overdone special effects. This is a very special film, that deserves 5 stars, because of the the way you will feel when the credits role at the end. And too, it will leave you wondering what happens to that last silver 'powerball' that the alien leaves with Karen Allen, just prior to leaving earth. I heartily recommend this DVD.

  • Starman

I first saw this movie with my then girlfriend (now wife of 21 years) back in the early 80's. Jeff Bridges is outstanding as the friendly alien who takes the form (face, features) of Karen Allen's deceased husband. The movie touches all of your emotions (humor, grief, anger, etc.). You can't help but get choked up by Karen Allen and her obvious broken heart of her lost/deceased husband and then only to see her go from a mild hatred to true love of Bridges as the movie progesses. Charles Martin Smith (Toad from American Graffiti) also gives a great supporting role as the G-11 gov't scientist who is part of the NORAD team trying to track down the alien. His final FU to his boss is both classic and subtle, you really have to look for it. It's a wonder Smith has not done many other films ...

  • Starman movie

Starman is an older movie, and one my husband and I enjoyed. Sci-fi, love story, and just enough humor to make you smile. Plenty of action, as well. Jeff Bridges, and other familiar faces make the movie worth watching. Starman arrives in response to an "invitation", but is greeted by the same government that invited him, in any way but friendly. The movie revolves around his attempt to meet up with a ship to return home--or die, many states from where he landed, and his ship was confiscated when found. A race against time, and obstacles. Special effects are "ok", to pretty darn good. Profanity is minimal, maybe two not so bad words. I bought it for the trip down memory lane. Found it's still an enjoyable movie, and worth watching.
