The Robbs--Milwaukee's Own Beatles
I clearly remember dancing to the Robbs at the local CYO dance in West Milwaukee, just before they departed for California to be the house band on "Where the Action Is," with Dick Clark. To my surprise, the album had been re-released on CD by Collector's Choice Music, from the original Mercury recordings. Originally hailed as "Milwaukee's Own Beatles" the three brothers and unrelated drummer were one of the top local groups in the area during the mid-60's. The quality of both the songwriting and performance is readily evident on several songs, particularly "I Race with the Wind," "Rapid Transit," "Cynthia Loves," and especially "Bittersweet." The remaining tunes, though catchy, don't quite hit the level of the four which were released as singles, and bubbled under the Billboard Hot ... The Robbs would be considered by many to be a garage band with a unique sound that clearly identifies them from the 60's. The CD features the hit single "Race With The Wind" that was released in 1966. It seldom gets played on the radio today, which is a real shame. The song is still one of my all time favorites.
