2007 Vanessa Redgrave & Meryl Streep Star w/Daughters
Has there been a more criticized film than this great melodrama? 'Too loosely based on it', Michael Cunningham's screenplay adaptation takes 'too much' creative license with Susan Minot's novel. Quite frankly, I believe his version works so well that most critics can't get it! A 2nd reason for critics having hissy fits is due to Ann Lord (Vanessa Redgrave) not expressing more deep regret for an age old error made during her youth. That's preposterous, however, because Lord is on her death bed reminiscing in & out of medicated consciousness in the presence of her daughters, Constance (Natasha Richardson--Redgrave's real-life daughter) & Nina (Toni Collette). This HD DVD is stunning to watch because of gorgeous scenery. Although, the caliber of performances pales even that magnificent of a ... Cunningham's screenplay, directed by Lajos Koltai, is a moral melodrama well worth watching repeatedly & owning. The test of time will likely be generous to "Evening." It may be too intellectually advanced for dim-witted critics who view the "Terminator" series as 'classic'! The story goes: Ann Grant Lord (Redgrave) lays dying in bed at her Newport, RI, home, on the Atlantic coast. Pain medication side-effects cause Ann to become flooded with recollections of her life's ancient history. With adult daughters at her beside, Ann begins to recall the summer when she was her best friend's, Lila (Mamie Gummer--Meryl Streep's look-alike, real-life daughter), bridesmaid. Flashbacks reveal Ann (Grant, the younger, played by Claire Danes) & Lila's younger alcoholic brother, Buddy (Hugh Dancy), didn't look favorably upon Lila's upcoming marriage. Both protested believing that Lila was marrying a man of equal social status, rather than the one with whom she was known to be in love, Harris Arden (Patrick Wilson), the family housemaid's son (later turned physician). The 4 lives of Ann, Harris, Lila & Buddy become eternally braided by secret passions that flame into quite a few intriguing twists & turns. Now that fifty years have passed, Lila (Meryl Streep) shows up to visit Ann, probably for the last time, before she dies. This is when their secrets unfold. One of them is a same-gender attraction between two of the four. But, that secret's much milder than the one they've hidden for half a century. I'm not telling it either. "Evening's" script is worthy of the great leading actors, Redgrave & Streep. It also provides a grand opportunity for supporting cast members--Richardson, Gummer, Collette, Wilson, Dancy & add to that list, Eileen Atkins & Glenn Close (!), as well as a fine bit part ensemble--to deliver spot-on performances. "Evening" profits from creating a rare nostalgic aura of a long, introspective death bed scenario that doesn't become 'confessional'. Perhaps that's what irks critics the most--what they expected didn't happen. The secrets hold the keys that explain "Evening's" 'new-age' appeal. Same-gender passions are supposed to leave the participants ashamed. Women who make mistakes are expected to be forever guilt-ridden. (Not!). "Evening's" moral is that 'there are no mistakes . . . life goes on'. Gyula Pados' cinematography is fantastic. Jan A.P. Kaczmarek's musical score is mood inspiring. Lajos Koltai's direction's end result is a masterpiece on the cutting edge of moral melodrama with a surprising statement to make to the awake. One that's ahead of its era. See it, if you're willing to go up deep enough~

Beautiful Film & a 2 Family Project: Streep & Redgrave
Vanessa Redgrave plays the lead role as a mother of daughters who is dying and around whom they are gathered. During her in and out of being here and being there, Redgrave's character travels back over a tragic event in hers and her friends' lives. Meryl Streep plays one of her friends, in fact her best friend from back when. Natasha Richardson, Redgrave's now deceased adult daughter, plays her daughter in the film. Mamie Gummer, Streep's daughter, plays the younger Streep character in Redgrave's character's flashbacks. This is one heck of a drama with a very heavy plot that's intricate and well scripted. With the kind of renowned actors playing the key roles it is an absolutely gorgeous and very high quality film. Evening
I bought this movie because Claire Danes stars in it. She was fun to watch, as usual. The movie had alot of creative parts that I really liked how they filmed (from an artistic angle). I liked that there are two real life mother/daughter actresses in the film (V.Redgrave / N.Richardson & M.Streep /M.Gummer). The movie does contain some bad taste matierial; quick examples being cursing, sexuality, drinking... One scene I would keep forever and ever is at the end of the movie: a dying older Anne thinks back to a time that she had between her and her two young daughters in the kitchen.I bought this movie because Claire Danes stars in it. Great movie!
It is a great movie where you feel all your emotions, it gets a little slow in some parts but all in all is a great movie. It is the same type of movie as the notebook or something else written by Nicholas Sparks. I decided to buy it because I haven't been able to find it in any stores and when i watched it with a friend i knew i had to own it.
