While it contains little of the artistry and none of the nuance of Quentin Tarantino's DEATH PROOF, HELL RIDE is a similarly fun retro romp through the seedier corners of American B-movie history. Written and directed by Larry Bishop (son of Rat Packer Joey Bishop), who also stars, HELL RIDE is a tribute to the biker flicks of the late 1960s and early ‘70s. The movie follows Pistolero (Bishop) and his two captains, the Gent (Michael Madsen) and Comanche (Eric Balfour), as they booze and brawl their way across the Arizona desert, with the ultimate goal of exacting revenge on a rival gang that murdered one of their members. A healthy mix of throat slitting, coke-sniffing, and naked female oil wrestling makes HELL RIDE one of the more gratuitously sensational films of recent memory; yet if one is able to get past the almost laughably blatant tastelessness on which the movie is built, there is a fairly good time to be had. As the dapper Gent, Madsen proves once again that he could read from the phonebook and still sound like one bad dude, and tip-of-the-cap cameos from Dennis Hopper and David Carradine solidify the film's enjoyably retro/po-mo vibe. Every aspect of HELL RIDE, from the washed-out cinematography to the Link Wray-style spaghetti western surf soundtrack to the pulped-up dialogue, is hyper-stylized and blatantly self-conscious, and that is ultimately what saves the film. If there was even a trace of seriousness here the movie would be unwatchable--luckily, there isn't. Yes, it's completely offensive, and no it isn't going to win over any fans at N.O.W., but for every BRIDESHEAD REVISITED, you have to have a HELL RIDE or the whole lousy business will just crumble.

    Take a Hell Ride!

    Tarantino did an excellent job of weaving sone old school biker film elements into this modern classic. There was lots of sand/desert which gave it some flavor from the old B movies from the sixties. You know, when the attitude was to take a group of bikes and a camera crew into the desert or to a secluded beach where the gang could do just about anything... ride, race, party, have all kinds of sexual esacpades, and stage some great fight scenes. Hell Ride had all of that. I loved the Dennis Hopper character, especially when he got to wear the classic Easy Rider fringed jacket. Gotta love a guy who can die more than once. Great cast all around! Some bad ass guys and some seriously hot women. Great biker film music. I have been looking for a modern biker film that was a kind of "best of" ...

    Don't Waste Your Time...

    This movie tries sooo hard to be cool it's ridiculous. Everything, from the look of the film, the cinematography, the editing, the dialogue and the acting, is geared in super cool mode from the get go. Just to make sure that no one misses how cool this film is, there's a soundtrack of really cool rock n roll tunes and a twangy western-surf-tex mex guitar playing constantly throughout the film. As a final reminder of how frickin cool this movie is, all the actors have been instructed to speak in a hoarse voice, because, as we all know, that's bad ass. The plot (if there indeed is one) seems pretty straightforward. But as someone else already pointed out, the director and star of the film, seems fiercely determined not to tell that story, instead focusing on a plethora of ...

    Hell Ride

    I love Quentin Tarantino's off the wall movies. As a typical biker movie, meaning one that makes all bikers the most horrible folks on earth, it rates 100%. Being a biker myself I know better so I don't get all upset by the stereotyping. Michael Madsen (an all time favorite), Dennis Hopper, Eric Balfour, Vinnie Jones, and David Carradine are all terrific actors well worth watching no matter what they are in. This is one of those movies that you need to watch a few times in order to get the whole story line sorted out. Michael Madsen may very well start a new biker fashion: he spent the whole movie in a white tuxedo shirt, ruffles and all, and a suit jacket. Not your average riding gear! Also, Quentin being Quentin, you have blood, gore, naked girls, XXX language all in abundant quantities. ...

    Hell Ride

    I liked the movie. A lot of blood, gore and sex. The actors were pretty good also. I really liked the scene when one of the Bikers ate a few mushrooms in the desert and the Maggot Brain track from Funkadelic started playing. It was an adequate cut for the hallucinations that the Biker started having. Also Dennis Hopper was at his best. May he rest in peace. One of my favorite actors of all time...

    Review of Hell Ride

    This movie is true to the Tarantino/Rodriguez method for producing retro drive-in movie B-films; very graphic novel-esque, with over-the-top characters, excellence in vehicles, set-dressing and costumes and as always, some big name characters who are there to have some fun making a movie rather than going for their next Oscar nomination. This movie is not for sharing with the kids, folks.
