In post-World War II Japan, a janitor finds a deathly ill boy lying beside a metal candy container. The janitor unwittingly tosses the possession into the night, beginning a most unusual tale of survival set amid the atrocities of war in the Animé GRAVE OF FIREFLIES. Brother and sister Seita and Setsuko, ages 14 and 4, flee their disheveled home and deceased parents to make their bid for a new life. Before American troops begin to occupy their country, the children resort to dwelling in an abandoned bomb shelter in the countryside. Though these siblings later get a sense of safety, they realize necessities such as food and water will not be easy to come by.

Grave of the Fireflies
I've heard that Grave of the Fireflies was the best anime film ever, and I can see why. It is completely flawless with it's historical content and reality drama. It was a very sad scenario tale of the horrors of the aftermath of war. Two children(Seita and Setsuko), lose their mother during the bombing of Japan in WWII, and struggle to survive everyday, especially when neccessities like food and clothes are hard to find, and none of the villagers would help them. Seeing how much these children suffered upset me very much. I know the bombing had to be done to end the war, but it was sad knowing that innocent people, especially children who were just trying to live their lives, would suffer and die. That especially brought me to tears. The movie also depicts how deadly pride can be. The ... I've heard that Grave of the Fireflies was the best anime film ever, and I can see why. Poignant, mesmerizing and beautiful.... and sadly, heart-breaking. I saw this in my Japanese wartime history class, and it absolutely captivated everyone in the room. An important thing to point out is that just because this is anime, it isn't meant to be for little children. This movie has many layers that young kids under 10 or 11 probably wouldn't fully understand. It's a serious film about children who become orphans in post-war Japan and must somehow learn how to survive. What I loved about the film so much was emotions it stirred in me. I have always wanted to own this anime as I had read various reviews that it was spectacularly beautiful...it is that and much more. This movie should never be made with human characters, they will never be able to capture the surreal horror of what happened to these children. It is, in short, a work of art. I highly recommend that you purchase this dvd if you are into this genre. For a full description of the movie, you can find various out there, so I won't waste our time.
