It's a pilot, not a movie
I had seen part of "Between Heaven and the Hangmen" when I was younger, but only remembered a few parts and wanted to see it again. As you might expect, there were some good parts along with the bad. I don't plan on watching it again, though, because it is not real good as a stand-alone movie. It was designed to be the pilot for a TV series about the story of Ned Blessing and how he ultimately was sentenced to hang, so most of it is viewed as a flashback. The problem is that it introduces characters and situations that are just left hanging--in the figurative sense--presumably to be taken care of in later shows. The "movie" ends in a cliffhanger after all this bad stuff has happened to Ned and makes it clear that his next plan of action will be to go catch all the bad guys, etc. ... The "movie" ends in a cliffhanger after all this bad stuff has happened to Ned and makes it clear that his next plan of action will be to go catch all the bad guys, etc. Another, somewhat smaller issue, is that sometimes the acting is a little too fake-looking when the actors exaggerate their emotions more than a reasonable amount (I know, I know, that's why they call it "acting." This is just my opinion.). In defense of the show, there was a series that followed this plot for a while. I have not seen any other parts of the series. It is possible that those episodes bring some sort of closure to the whole thing. On the other hand, I understand that the series was terminated early. In other words, there probably wasn't a "final episode" that wrapped everything up. So, what should you get out of this review? Basically, if you are interested in only buying "Between Heaven and the Hangmen" I do not recommend it as a stand-alone movie. If you are planning to buy all the other following episodes of the series along with it, you're on your own, because I haven't seen them.
