"Run silent, run deep" is a term that accurately describes the mission of the submarine in this tense World War II drama. Commander Richardson (Clark Gable) is the only survivor when his sub is hit by a notorious Japanese destroyer dubbed Bongo Pete in the Bongo Straits of Japan. Back at Pearl Harbor, Richardson obsessively plays out strategies that would have saved his crew. When he is reassigned a new ship in the Pacific, he must face old demons as well as the sub's younger executive officer who was slated for captain, Lt. Bledsoe (Burt Lancaster). Bledsoe has the support of his crew and locks horns easily with Richardson, but when the captain disobeys navy orders to stay clear of the Bongo Straits, taking the crew right in to go after Bongo Pete, there is very nearly a mutiny. RUN SILENT, RUN DEEP is marked by strong performances, particularly by Gable, and a taut script. The scenes of the rigorous sub drills the captain puts his crew through are intensive and exceptional.

Good old fashioned entertainment with real actors.
The actors today couldn't carry Burt and Clark's jock straps. Today they are too busy being political and trying to act if they knew how. Excellent movie without computer graphics and enhancements. Two of the best actors of all time. Even the supporting cast is good.

A really good World War II submarine movie made in 1958 starring Clark Gable (Command Decision, Mogambo, Soldier of Fortune, etc) who plays a single minded Commander Robinson, who lost his submarine duing an overzealous pursuit and has sworn to take revenge against the Japanese destroyer that sunk his ship. But on his new submarine command, his executive officer played by Burt Reynolds (The Train, From Here to Eternity, Valdez is Coming, etc) believes Richardson s obsession is putting the crews lives in danger, leading to talk of mutiny. The movie also co-stars Jack Warden (The Aviator, The Replacements, The Presido, etc) in a key command position on the submarine. The director here is Robert Wise and he has a whole collection of hits including The Sand Pebbles, The Andromeda Strain, ... Also, may appeal to drama lovers a bit and is a great one for Classic movie lovers to add to their collection also as this certainly is a Classic-and starring a couple of GREAT actors of the era. Will fill a nights entertainment for certain even if you have watched it before.

Touching & informative movie, even if done in typical Hollywood fashion. I enjoy Clark Gable movies, mostly. This is no exception. A bit more of the bravery of those serving on subs is in order, but I find no lack either. Seeing Don Rickles in a serious role was interesting. I give the movie 2 thumbs up & rate it just a bit below a few others (Longest Day, Braveheart, We Were Soldiers et. al.)The Longest Day & Brave Heart get my nod as the 2 best. One of the Best WWII drama's of all time.
One of my favorite WWII movies. Realistic conflict between the Sub's Commander and Executive Officer, where Commander has a plan.... Very realistic, shot on a Baloa Class submarine used in the Pacific during the war. Several real sub's were lost in area known as the "Bungo Straits". Don Rickles serves up rare dramatic performance blended with just right amount of comedy. The IJNS Akakase was a real destroyer during the War which lends a more realistic and plausible narrative that supports the basic theme of a warriors duel, Sub Commander Vs Detroyer Commander. This movie surpasses "The Hunt for Red October" in acting, plot and realism, in my opinion it's right up there with "The Enemy Below" for taunt naval warfare drama. Worth every penny. Retired Army Medical Company Commander and ... One of my favorite WWII movies. Realistic conflict between the Sub's Commander and Executive Officer, where Commander has a plan.... I like Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster it’s too shabby either. Subject matter is one of my favorites too, WWII. Watching the exciting bow shot by a submarine charging towards a oncoming destroyer quite well carried out. I’d give the film a 4/5 rating
