Mario Golf makes its GameCube debut in a release designed to capture the distinctive look of the Mushroom Kingdom. Players now have the option to compete on five themed courses or one based on classic Super Mario Bros. elements. With the latter, players have to worry about more than sand traps when teeing off, as Chomp-Chomps are chained near fairways and Piranha Plants would like nothing more than to snap up errant golf balls. Players can also aim for pipes to send their ball to new areas of the course, avoid crushing Thwomps, and more. Developed by the same team behind the original PlayStation's Hot Shots Golf, the interface consists of a horizontal swing meter designed to simplify things for novices. Pressing the A button will start the meter, which will begin moving steadily from right to left. Once it reaches the desired power setting, pressing the button again begins the downswing. A third and final button press determines the shot's accuracy. In addition, the game lets players set the point of impact for spin and also features variable wind and weather conditions to influence play. For younger audiences having trouble with timing involved in landing a perfect shot, they can opt to use a partially automated system that takes the guesswork out of selecting clubs and determining the amount of power needed to hit the ball. It also provides a larger sweet spot, allowing players a greater margin for error when pressing the button to determine accuracy. No matter which swing system is used, up to four players can compete in Stroke Play, Tournament, Doubles, Ring Attack, Speed Golf, and five additional game modes. A total of 16 characters are available in the game, including Mario, Peach, Donkey Kong, Wario, and Luigi, each with individual ratings in power and swing tendency. Some naturally hit straight, some have the ball fade to the right, while others have their shots draw to the left. Gamers who also purchase Mario Golf: Advance Tour for Game Boy Advance will be able to create their own characters from scratch, raise their skill levels, and then transfer them to the GameCube version.

Fun and challenging, but progression designed for one,
This is an incredibily fun, yet challenging game. I love the game of golf and Mario Golf offers the same fun, but with Mario's unique touch. The first few tournament courses are not too difficult and can be won with any of the character you choose, but I suppose they were designed to make you master your skills before moving on to the more difficult tournaments. I personally like Donkey Kong for his long ball ability, but there are other characters whose well ballanced control of the ball is better suited for some of the holes. I don't like the fact that you have to do a single player game in order to unlock other tournaments. If this game were more like Mario Cart: Double Dash where two can play the tournaments to unlock other characters, cars, or races, I would have liked ... This is an incredibily fun, yet challenging game. I love the game of golf and Mario Golf offers the same fun, but with Mario's unique touch. While some golfing principals are handy to know, everything you need to know to master golf in Mario's world can be learned in about 20-30 minutes of watching the tutorials. However, this is a slow paced strategy game where patience, paying attention to the natural physics of the course (like wind direction, wind speed, slope of the green, speed of the green, rain, etc.) and careful planning help you compete well, not at all a fast paced FPS's or racing game kids usually like. My kids usually get bored after a while and return to Super Smash Bros. On the whole, it is a good game, one that I'll enjoy for a long time and finding it for less than $20 made my wallet feel good about it, too.

Great golfing action starring the famous plumber!
There are plenty of game modes and loads of courses and characters to unlock. The controls are very simple, using the a traditional power bar scheme for players to time their button presses in order to take a shot. Other adjustments are available, but oftentimes unnecessary. Graphically, the game is very sharp with great draw distances and well-animated and detailed character models. Multiplayer is fast-paced, as are single-player Tournaments. Just because golf is slow-paced in real life doesn't mean that the game has to be! Great game, well worth 10-15$ for anyone looking for a Hot Shot's Golf inspired Nintendo game.There are plenty of game modes and loads of courses and characters to unlock. As with just about all Mario titles, the game is packed with hours of fun. Toadstool Tour is chockfull of courses players can choose from with different modes of play to cater to each of their skill levels. Players can choose from a host of familiar faces such as Mario and Luigi, not to mention Bowser and Donkey Kong. They can also choose less familiar faces like Diddy Kong and Daisy. Mario Gollf: Toastool Tour is not only a great game but certainly one of the best golf games you can play on any console, period.As with just about all Mario titles, the game is packed with hours of fun. Bought the game for nostalgia, and enjoyed every minute of it.
I played this game as a kid and had a blast doing it. I re-purchased it here recently to add to my GCN collection. The controls are fairly easy and pose no issues for new players or veterans. Linking with the GBA version of the game is possible and allows you to insert your custom characters into this game. --Pros-- Easy to learn GBA linking opens many possibilities Music is very nice, but a little repetitive Lots of characters and unlockables --Cons-- Easy to master Gameplay gets redundant after a while Once you get past the skill curve, the game pretty much beats itselfI played this game as a kid and had a blast doing it.
