Indeed, it seems that each generation of whites and Indians will have to read and reread Vine Deloria's Manifesto for some time to come, before being able to absorb his special, ironic Indian point of view and what he is really saying, with a great deal of humor really, about U.S. race relations, federal bureaucracies, Christian churches, and social scientists. This book should be, in my opinion, required reading for all , no matter what their special interests may be. Nobody can ever accuse Deloria of ... Subtitled: An Indian Manifesto. I don't even think he cares if he's popular or sells well. He's just a man trying to get those outside the Native culture to see the truth. Is he, as some say, "an angry old man who won't let go of the past"? Maybe, but if you read his works with an open mind, putting yourself and YOUR family in the place of the Native People, YOU may just get a little miffed yourself! Also try to keep in mind, the past is NOT dead when the wrongs of the past are PRESENTLY continuing! For example, how would YOU like it if the U.S. government took all YOUR family's lands & put it in a "trust", then sold mineral rights, or grazing rights to anybody with a wad of big bills? How would YOU like it if you had to PROVE you're white, & then prove HOW MUCH white blood runs through YOUR veins? Or, would YOU like to have to be a member of a REGISTERED, FEDERALLY RECOGNIZED family of people in order to bill yourself as a member of that family? Yeah, be a FEDERAL "JONES", or don't call yourself "Jones"...right? Deloria's more interested in results than in being tactful. Sickened & tired of the traditional Indian image, the Hollywood version of Natives, he asserts the worth if not the dignity of the red man and lambasts the political, social, and religious forces that perpetuate the Little Big Horn/tipi/drunken savage stereotyping of his people. If there ever was a "noble savage", it just might be Deloria, with all his faults. Another book NOT for sissies!
