With an empathy virus inside of him so he can read people's minds, Will discovers that Maria Gonzalez (Samantha Morton) is the culprit, but he instantly falls in love with her and turns in someone else in her place, leading to a dangerous affair that jeopardizes his family, his career, and his life.The blossoming romance between Will and Maria is reminiscent of the classic BRIEF ENCOUNTER, in which two people are willing to risk so much for true love. A View of the Future With A Romantic Spin.
Code 46 is a love story set in a futuristic new world where cities are heavily controlled and only accessible through checkpoints. All people are scanned for genetic compatibility for mating, and cannot travel unless they have papelles, a special travel permit. The Sphinx controls everthing except the outside cities. The desert has crept in and shanty towns are jammed with non-citizens; people without papers are forced to live outside the confines of a rigid government-ruled life. William (Tim Robbins) is a family man who works as a Sphinx governmental investigator living in our future Seattle. When William is sent to Shanghai to solve a case of fake papelles, he suspects a woman named Maria Gonzalez (Samantha Morton) as the conspirator. She also works for Sphinx, yet has somehow, ... Although he realizes she is behind the forgeries, he does not stop his baser needs of having an affair with her. He totally hides her crime, in lieu of duties and opts to have a passionate affair with her on his first visit lasting only 24 hours. William departs, yet, somehow can not help but becoming totally obsessed with Maria. Later, the investigation is re-opened and William returns to finish. He returns, only to discover she has been accused of a Code 46 violation and any further relationship is impossible. The chemistry definitely works between Robbins and Morton on screen. We are drawn in by the suspense and the political and criminal implications of the future of love. I'll give this 3/5 for its provocative, startlingly secret love story of one of our possibly endless set of futures. I'm a huge Sci-Fi fan, so was happy to get my hands on anything new in the Sci-Fi world that I didn't already own. I think the actors did a fine job, but were miscast. There was no chemistry at all (Tim Robbins looked like he was kissing his sister). The story line was difficult to follow at times, but after watching it a second time it flowed a little better. I liked the premise, though (the whole future-world thing). Could have expanded a bit more on how we got that way (the whole cloning thing and why it started in the first place was a bit murky). But, overall, pretty good. Glad I bought it.
