    Good ‘Old School’ manual but very weak on diagnostics

    This manual is great if you like state of the art ‘old school’ repair/maintenance reference materials. I feel it’s trouble shooting or diagnostics info is marginal at best. The first thing I looked up was cruise control for my ‘01 Tacoma. It suggested three basic visual checks after which it recommended taking taking it to a dealer. Hello Haynes - why do you think I bought your book? I suppose this is a good reference if you need a decent guide for minor and major mechanical tasks or if you’ve got a Gen 1 truck that decided to completely overhaul/rebuild.

    A must, if you plan to fix it yourself.

    I bought this manual because I purchased a 1998 Toyota Tacoma that needed some work. The manual more than paid for itself with my first repair project (timing belt, idler pulleys and crank seal). I was able to do the labor myself rather than spending the $350+ estimated by several local shops. I had all the exploded parts pictures, specs, and torque settings at my finger tips. With the help of this manual the repair went well. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because some of the illustrations in the book are a little unclear, and some of the indexing makes some items difficult to find. All in all a good manual.

    Lets face it.... cars are a luxury, therefore an expense. The simple fact is, no matter how you look at it, even if your car runs perfect all the time, you still have to put gas in it to make it go. Expense! But who's car runs perfect all the time? If you have one, let me know so I can get one too! But honestly, at some point in time your car needs some attention. Whether it is the simple oil change, brakes, or something more difficult, wouldn't it be nice to do it yourself as opposed to shelling out a bunch of cash to have someone else do it for you? The Haynes line of repair manuals are perfect for the novice level and up do it yourselfers! Not only do they put the tasks in an easy to understand text, they use excellent photographs to accompany the written repair. Making this a extremely ...
