    When you travel the prairies of the America's heartland it is easy to say there is nothing there and it is monotonous scenery. William Least Heat Moon opens the the eyes of the unseeing and shows the richness and diversity that makes up this complex region. He does this by concentrating on a small area that is representative of the vastness and puts it under a microscope. If you have no wish for intricate exploration and are only a "big picture" person then going through this book could be tedious. However, if you marvel in the details of the earth and find interest and beauty in all things, the book is a magical and eye-opening and well worth the journey. Having traveled with Moon on his "Blue Highways" and "River Horse" I am always ready to take another journey with this excellent writer ...

    This is a book for someone who reads for sheer pleasure and who can appreciate Least Heat-Moon's remarkable eloquence. I especially enjoyed reading excerpts aloud to my grandchildren. This coming summer, I hope to be able to see first-hand the places of which the author wrote.
