Synopsis
Five year old Laura Ingalls and her family, Pa, Ma, Mary and Baby Carrie, live in a snug log cabin in the woods of Wisconsin, a full days walk from the nearest town, Pepin. Lauraleads a traditional farm life: spending time churning butter and making cheese and maple syrup. Laura goes to town for the first time, and plays with her sister. Each night, while the wind blows, and the wolves howl, the happy sound of Pa's fiddle, brought vividly to life on this recording, keeps the family safe and warm. Little House in the Big Woods is the first book in the Laura Years series., Based on the real-life adventures of Laura Ingalls Wilder, Little House in the Big Woods is the first book in the award-winning Little House series, which has captivated generations of readers. This edition features the classic black-and-white artwork from Garth Williams. Little House in the Big Woods takes place in 1871 and introduces us to four-year-old Laura, who lives in a log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. She shares the cabin with her Pa, her Ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their lovable dog, Jack. Pioneer life isn't easy for the Ingalls family, since they must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But they make the best of every tough situation. They celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do their spring planting, bring in the harvest in the fall, and make their first trip into town. And every night, safe and warm in their little house, the sound of Pa's fiddle lulls Laura and her sisters into sleep. The nine books in the timeless Little House series tell the story of Laura's real childhood as an American pioneer, and are cherished by readers of all generations. They offer a unique glimpse into life on the American frontier, and tell the heartwarming, unforgettable story of a loving family.

    Truly interesting book

This is a classic, of course. It was read aloud at nap time by my first-grade reacher, and I have loved it ever since (decades and decades!) The book itself was in perfect condition.

  • One of the Best

I loved this book, as I did the series. As a child and as an adult, one of my favorite themes is how a character is challenged in terms of physical survival. In her semi-autobiographical series, Laura Ingalls Wilder includes a great deal of detail about how the Wilder family sought to survive in the big woods: how they built their house, kept themselves warm, found things to eat, made things to play with. All of the characters are realistic and engaging; interestingly, the writer does not leave out certain details about the family that might be considered too sophisticated for small children, i.e. that Laura's father did not like to live anywhere that was more settled than a small town, and that when a large town grew up around them, they had to move on. In other words, the book is ...

  • Little house in the big woods is a classic. Three generations now are avid fans of the entire series.

I read the series in 4th grade my daughter did as well and now my granddaughter. It's tradition.
