Learn About Cameroon!
3 Americans and 1 Canadian join an American bicycle guide in Western and Northern Cameroon in 1988. Western Cameroon was a former British colony, while the larger remainder of the country was a former French colony (as was most of West Africa). If you want to learn about "life on the ground" in a West African country like Cameroon this is a good place to do it. Cycling in rough terrain, no electricity and running water in many places. Neil is a tougher man than I am (maybe I'm to old now). I wouldn't want to take this trip. It was twenty years ago, but I don't know if much has changed. You can tell that Peart is a perfectionist, and hard driving, sometimes not very forgiving, but that is what has made him one of the best drummers and lyricist in rock-n-roll the past thirty years. A lot of his thoughts and feelings come through in this writing. You can get a taste for what it is like for the poor children of Cameroon. The women seem to be doing most of the work. The males from about age 10 to 25 seem to be "hustlers", trying to hustle the tourists. Even the best motels don't really make me want to stay there: bugs, sagging beds, cold water in a bowl to wash, the smell of urine throughout the book. And they spent as many nights not even in motels, more like sheds. And the language barrier: Peart had learned some French in his early life (an O' Canada thing), but only the western third of the country (the former British Cameroon) speak English, so without the little French, things might have been worse. I wish that there was a book for every country like this. You can't get this kind of feel for a country like Cameroon from the television news. Most of my American and Canadian counter parts have no idea what it is like on the ground in a country like that. So, unless you go there yourself, you need a book like this. I feel like I went to Cameroon riding along with Neil, but I didn't get dysentery and have to slap the bugs off to do it. Peart (an avid reader) brought two books on the trip with him, Nicomachean Ethics by Aristotle and Dear Theo by Vincent van Gogh, to read at rest stops and before bedtime. He would entwine thoughts and quotations about these two books throughout The Masked Rider. You can see where he refines and reinforces his own beliefs with these books and includes them in his trip. If you are a cyclist. If you want to learn about Cameroon, or any West African country. If you want to get a glimpse of what makes Neil Peart tick, get this book.

A Rush Geeks Review.....
What can I say I haven't completly read it yet, but they are asking for my review. I have always been a rush fan since the early seventies. As a drummer I am humbled by Neil's talent. I have always found his lyrics entertaining and inspirational. So being a cyclist I am sure find this book just as inspirational and entertaining as his songs.
