Player's Guide to Eberron by James Wyatt, Keith Baker,
First of all, the Player's Guide to Eberron, while not a must-have for all Eberron players, gives a nice overview of character roles and information in the D&D world of Eberron. Eberron is not your normal D&D fantasy world, and common character concepts and motivations may be a little different from what players are used to. This guide does a good job of presenting players with the information they need to create characters with ties to the world, as well as providing plenty of background information and "common knowledge" about the nations, power groups, gods, legends, and adversaries of the Eberron world. The guide also presents some information on what is different about Eberron. (Dragons of any color can be of any alignment, orcs once saved the world from invasion from another ... First of all, the Player's Guide to Eberron, while not a must-have for all Eberron players, gives a nice overview of character roles and information in the D&D world of Eberron. Eberron is not your normal D&D fantasy world, and common character concepts and motivations may be a little different from what players are used to. This guide does a good job of presenting players with the information they need to create characters with ties to the world, as well as providing plenty of background information and "common knowledge" about the nations, power groups, gods, legends, and adversaries of the Eberron world. The guide also presents some information on what is different about Eberron. (Dragons of any color can be of any alignment, orcs once saved the world from invasion from another plane, giants once had a civilization that was more magically advanced than any other culture since, Eberron Drow worship scorpions not spiders...) Which is useful for players and GMs alike when building character hooks and adventure ideas. Lastly, there are a few new Feats and other Game Mechanics to give characters even more options, all of which, like the rest of the material in the book, could easily be adapted to another campaign world. All in all, the Player's Guide to Eberron is an excellent soourcebook for Eberron and D&D in general. If you are interested in what makes the world of Eberron different from Greyhawk, the Realms, Mystara, Ravenloft, this would be an ideal sourcebook to start with.

The Player's Guide is simply a more concise Campaign Setting, making it significantly easier for players to find information and maps. For GMs--it does have some "spoilers" as far as higher DC information check info on some of the organizations and villain groups--if your group has issues balancing player knowledge vs. character knowledge, get the book for yourself and limit the information they can access. Overall it's a handy tool and this is my second copy as a GM.The Player's Guide is simply a more concise Campaign Setting, making it significantly easier for players to find information and maps.
