About this product

Product Information

Dashing Gregory Peck stars as General Frank Savage, commander of the 8th Air Force during World War II. Loosely based on the true story of Major General Frank A. Armstrong, TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH begins with Savage appearing to be a fearless fighter with almost no compassion for his men. Told in flashback from the perspective of Major Harvey Stovall (Dean Jagger), the story unfolds as Savage takes over Stovall's Bomb Group in 1942. The company has suffered numerous losses, morale is at an all-time low, and the tired pilots and their crews are immediately antagonized by Savage's obsession with discipline, leaving Savage and Stovall with the onerous task of rebuilding the pride of a fighting force that despises its leader. Jagger received an Oscar for his efforts, but the real star is Peck, exhibiting a vast repertoire to portray a complicated character. Using actual combat footage from both American and German cameras, director Henry King creates an environment in which bravery and heroism count but war itself is anything but romantic.

  • B-17s over Europe

1994 issue in a NTSC VHS format. Romanticized ideas intermixed with stark realism makes this a unique movie about WWII air warfare over Europe. Many of the actors were veterans of WWII which adds to this movies credibility. Outstanding actual air warfare footage is used which historians and militaria collectors appreciate. Probably one of the best films on this topic available. Definately belongs in a video collection. I'd suggest that adults review the film before allowing their small children to see it but I personally don't see a problem, it's just directed toward an adult audience. It's interesting, now that I live in Germany, to see the targets mentioned in this movie and the absolute devastation created by these raids in spite of heavy ground and air defences.

  • Twelve O'Clock High

For anyone interested in WWII history, this is one of the best. The theme is whether we make our own fate or does luck play a part. Made just after the war, it is one of the first films to use original air combat footage. Some of the best one-liners ever: What is maximum effort? Consider yourselves already dead... Get yourself a smoke and a drink, sit in your quonset hut and enjoy.

  • Another great Peck movie

Again the skill in older movie making comes out in this film uncluttered with special effects that do not seem to interfear with the art prosseses even by supporting actors in this WWII/post WWII Film and therefor proves once again to be an excilant addition to anyone's movie library and a compelling reason to purchase it.

  • couldn't watch it!

Poor because I wasn't able to watch it on my system, even though I CAN watch other movies in VHS format! Originally bought it as a special gift for my husband.
