  • Classic aviation narrative.

This book is an old friend. Ernst Udet's story is compelling for a couple of reasons. He would be of interest if only because he was the German ace of World War I with the highest number of aerial victories who actually survived the conflict. Only Manfred Von Richthofen had a higher score and, of course, he did not survive. But, also, Ernst Udet was a compelling personality. His sense of humor and his sense of the artistic moment run all through his narrative. In one memorable scene, after he had won the highest Imperial German honor the Blue Max, he treated his fiance Lo Zink to the sight of an entire garrison coming out to come to attention every time he walked by, since that was the protocol. Although he came to a sad end in World War II, Udet's story is one that calls to be read.
