  • Plays EVERYTHING but gear is kind of noisy

This is the best looking low profile and light weight DVD player I have seen on the market. It plays everything flawlessly including my DivX files, which have several built in subtitles, which the unit automatically detects. My only quirk with this is that certain high compression DivX files are slightly choppy because the onboard decoder cannot handle the bitrate. However, this is only a minor issue if you are playing high compression DivX files in the 700MB+ range. Anything below in the 300MB range plays without a hitch. DVD's play flawlessly as decoding those is not as much of an issue as the DivX files. My only quirk is with the remote, which looks is not as ergonomic as most remotes and has a bland key layout. In addition, the motor that spins the CD's and the laser ...

  • philips an solution to a problem

i had a problem the other day. my favorite band the moody blues had just had a dvd released covering the whole history of the band. sounds great, right? wrong, it was only released in the u.k. and would not play on my bought in the u.s.a. player. and when i shopped around the stores in my area none of them sold a player that would play anything released outside the united states. so the solution to my problem was this great inexpensive little player. all i had to do was plug it in program one command and it plays my new dvd and several other dvds that i have bought from the u.k. and germany. for the price of an dvd you will have a great looking player that works and sounds well, great.

  • Easy to use, slim and doesn't take up much room!

I bought this DVD player for me and my family for movie nights. It is slim and hardly takes up any room on my entertainment center. It is easy to use and comes with several features. I do need to read instruction book, but I haven't really had the time. There was one time when a disc got stuck in the system, but I was able to get it out. All in all, we are very happy with this product.

  • DVP642 - the all purpose DVD player

This is one exceptional DVD player. It has been on the market for quite some time now, earning the title 'old and venerable' on many sites, and for good reason. With only a few exceptions, this player will play everything you can throw at it. VCD, MP3 DVD, DivX, photo CD, hybrid CD, any format of recordable, plays without a hitch. The remote is not as intuitive as some, but it is easy enough to get used to. The output is exceptional. The unit is durable, with few complaints about repairs or breakdowns. It is slim and physically attractive, has enough on-unit controls to allow you to operate the device without the remote. It is quiet and relatively cool running - it does not draw attention to itself in enclosed areas like entertainment centers. It is priced more ...
