Matthew McConaughey headlines director Jean-Marc Vallée's biographical drama centering on the story of Ron Woodroof, a Texas electrician who was diagnosed as HIV-positive in 1986, and who subsequently devoted his life to providing fellow HIV patients with non-FDA-approved drugs and supplements during an era when doctors were still struggling to understand the devastating disease. Defying his surprise death sentence, Woodroof set out to procure any and all non-toxic alternative HIV treatments available, and established a "buyers club" to provide the treatments to others afflicted with the disease. But that mission quickly made him a target for both the U.S. medical establishment and the pharmaceutical industry, both of which resented his defiance of government sanctions, and joined forces to shut down his operation by any means necessary.

I've seen this movie before on HBO and basically wanted to add it to my DVD collection. Big fan of Matthew McConaughey and his character portrayal of Ron Woodruff was spot on. Supporting cast was decent as well.

"The Dallas Buyer's Club" will probably go down in Matthew McConaughey's carrer as the best movie he has ever done. Losing over 70 pounds for the role Matthew plays a real-life HIV positive/AIDS patient who is infected with the disease in 1985, the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. Ron Woodroof (Matthew) is a straight rodeo cowboy who has negative feelings towards gay to the point of homophobia. Once diagnosed with HIV/AIDS (because of unsafe sex with multiple women) he soon finds his world upside down and realizes AIDS is not just a gay disease and that it has no boundaries. The movie takes an honest look at how HIV/AIDS patients were treated during the Ronald Reagan years when , he as President, never once uttered the word AIDS and showed little compassion for those inflicted with it. Once Ron Woodroof realizes the AZT drug (the only drug that was made available to AIDS patients at that time) was actually killing him even more he discovers that in other countries like Mexico and Japan there have been discoveries of new meds but they are not available in the U.S.. So, he arranges to go to these countries, bring in the pills and sells them to those who can afford them. Remarkably, when Ron was diagnosed he was told by doctors he had 30 days to live: he lived for seven more years! Highly, highly recommended, not only for McConaughey and Leto's outstanding performances but for its portrayal of people struggling against not only a procedure-bound medical bureaucracy but also against a system geared against them by the enormous influence of pharmaceutical companies.

Absolutely the best portrait of the complications of the era and attempts to maintain life. I lived thru that era, managed to still be negative, but I devoted a lot of time to comforting friends in their final days. I got arrested for dealing pot, in that I was supplying pot to friends with a strong viral load, but not yet "sick enough by Government Standards to be prescribed Marinol." At least what I did helped ease the pain, helped negate the feeling of illness, and helped improve appetites so my friends could eat. I would recommend this movie to EVERYONE as virtually everyone knows, has known, or has lost a friend to the virus.Absolutely the best portrait of the complications of the era and attempts to maintain life.
