The "Gold Standard" for copying VHS tapes to DVD

I bought this unit to convert old VHS family movies to DVD. The Panasonic DMR-EZ475V is a pleasure to work with and makes the conversion a true "one button" operation. This unit will also accept input from a camcorder so I was able to transfer all my old VHS-C tapes to DVD as well. It is a very versatile machine with a built in TV tuner.

Only lasted 10 months before it stopped working

I previously owned one of these units and I got used to how it operated. It worked well and did what I needed it to do (play as well as record DVDs from live TV). The first one I owned lasted many years. The one I just purchased 10 months ago has stopped working - not only will it no longer record DVDs, it will not even play one. I am disappointed that it no longer works, because I did like the way it functioned.

    • Disappointed

This unit is the most complicated recording device I have ever used. I purchased it to record events on Broadcast TV on tape when I am unable to watch them live. (Using tape as oppossed to DVD because of cost.) When I finally figured out how to set the timed recording, I received the message that HD TV broadcasts are not allowed on VHS tape. And, that was the reason I bought this equipment!

This combo unit gets a lot of hype as being a great device. It's not, F60 errors undefined by mfg. abound on most units and appears to be a systemic problem by design. It is over priced when new and seems to command a high resale value but it is not worth it. The digital tuner is slow to change channels. The VHS tracking wanders and controller functions can be slow or misleading or not work as described in the manual, and the manual was written by someone with limited knowledge of the system. It chases you back and forth turning from page to page to figure out how to use just about any feature. It is just a real pain to use. I have now 3 units I'm trying to make one working system out of. If I had other choices I would have been better off with some other system but with time a effort ...

This is not a cheapo machine, it will do many, many things (it comes with a 100 !! page manual) and most of those things you will never use, BUT......it will not tape tv programs! WOW! It is not user friendly (you will need that 100 page manual). Before this I had a $150 Walmart JVC player, which did exactly what I wanted, but it crapped out on me after 10 years of reliable service, but they don't make them anymore.
