Great version of a Great works

This version was unique to itself. Great Expectations was a gripping story no matter who played it. Masterpiece Theatre , i am old so is some of my spelling, almost always presents super stories/movies to show on local PBT stations. I am very happy to have this version of the epic story. I read the book when I was about 12 years young. Loved it then and ever since. Several different movies have been made of this story. Each movie shows a slightly different style of Great Expectations. I am a movie buff and critic. This version is well done. The acting persons were very convincing and captivating. Highly recommended

    Expactations ... failed

We all know how boring are Dickens's books - to read is next to impossible. So I thought I'll give a try to watch something made into movie. Too stretched, slow going, old English / Irish dialect is hard to understand, too much of poverty / low life scenes, - to my taste is really waste of time and money.

  • Good But Characters Underdeveloped

You know it's hard to cram a 59 chapter book into roughly six hours of scenes, dialogue, plot, etc. This is a fairly good representation of the Dickens novel BUT lacks a bit in the character development area. The character of Joe, in particular, is slighted to the point that the viewer will not come away with a true understanding of the touching relationship between he and Pip...one that drives Pip's thoughts, motives, and actions frequently in the novel.

  • Great Movie!

This movie was hard to watch at the beginning because as a child, he is slapped around a lot from his older sister. But he grew up to be a wonderful and caring young man full of integrity. I loved the story even though at times it was hard to watch because of some gruesome characters.

  • Stunning version

Absolutely my favorite version. All the actors do an amazing job with the characters they portray. I have a version with John Mills as Pip and that is good too but I still am partial to this one. Love Gillian Anderson!
