Buy an older one with NUTS !

This review is for the older model Weller soldering guns, the ones which use NUTS to hold in the soldering tips, not the new style with set screws. You can still find these older style guns on eBay. They are VERY good, durable, and will last a lifetime if taken care of. I restore antique radios, and still use the one I bought in the 1960s when I was a teen. I would be lost without it, so I bought this one for a back up, just in case my original ever fails me.

      • Powerful soldering gun with a very fast heatup time

I purchased this soldering gun after viewing a reference to it on the w2aew youtube channel (covers hobby electronics). I replaced the tip using a very short length of 10 gauge solid copper wire as he recommended; my gun has the allen key tip lock rather than the axial locking nuts, but the mod works the same way otherwise. With this solid wire tip, the soldering can begin almost instantaneously, a big improvement from stock. I do prefer my hakko soldering station for most other soldering where better temperature control and precision is required. There's also a much better selection of fine tips. However, this is a great gun for high heat flow operations like chassis soldering and tab soldering. In fact it's invaluable for these tasks. There's lots of online support as well. A ...

      • Better than new

There's nothing better than old equipment. It's better made and lasts so much longer than the Chinese junk they have today. Whenever I can, I always buy vintage equipment. This soldering gun replaces the one I bought back in 1962. It finally gave up the ghost. This one will outlast me now. Thanks for a great item.

      • OLD Wellers are hard to beat

Old School Wellers are the best, THE NEW ones are simply JUNK< JUNK. Find an old one but ensure the unit has not been overheated: Look at the plastic around the copper wiring look for discoloration, equals DO NOT buy. Find an old unit and ensure the tip is good or purchase a new one.

      • Happy Buyer

I've owned this same soldering iron for many years. Mine has a broken case, which are no longer available. I am very happy I was able to find a replacement. It is in excellent condition and I look forward to using it for many years.
